A putative mechanism of neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis (MS) is trans-synaptic degeneration (TSD), whereby injury to a neuron leads to degeneration of synaptically connected neurons. The visual system is commonly involved in MS and provides an ideal model to study TSD given its well-defined structure. TSD may occur in an anterograde direction (optic neuropathy causing degeneration in the posterior visual pathway including the optic radiations and occipital gray matter) and/or retrograde direction (posterior visual pathway lesions causing retinal degeneration). In the current review, we discuss evidence supporting the presence of anterograde and retrograde TSD in the visual system in MS.

Purpose: This study explores the effects of mifepristone on the proliferation, motility, and invasion of malignant and benign meningioma cells, aiming to identify mifepristone-sensitive types and investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms.
Methods: IOMM-Lee and HBL-52 meningioma cells were treated with 0, vehicle control (VC), 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 μM of mifepristone for 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. Proliferation was assessed via CCK8 assay, while motility and invasion were measured using wound scratch and transwell assays.

Background: Affective cognition and emotion processing is impaired in amnestic Alzheimer's disease (AD), although less is known about atypical (AT) variants such as logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA) and posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). The affective blindsight pathway bypasses V1 via the superior colliculus-pulvinar route to activate the amygdala in cases of occipital lesioning and may explain maintenance of emotion identification and visual information processing in non-amnestic AD despite atrophy in visuospatial regions. We sought to characterize functional connectivity from key regions along the affective blindsight pathway in a clinically heterogeneous AD cohort.

Mixed signal analog/digital neuromorphic circuits represent an ideal medium for reproducing bio-physically realistic dynamics of biological neural systems in real-time. However, similar to their biological counterparts, these circuits have limited resolution and are affected by a high degree of variability. By developing a recurrent spiking neural network model of the retinocortical visual pathway, we show how such noisy and heterogeneous computing substrate can produce linear receptive fields tuned to visual stimuli with specific orientations and spatial frequencies.

Epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures, significantly impacts patient quality of life. Current classification methods focus primarily on clinical observations and electroencephalography (EEG) analysis, often overlooking the underlying dynamics driving seizures. This study uses surface EEG data to identify seizure transitions using a dynamical systems-based framework-the taxonomy of seizure dynamotypes-previously examined only in invasive data.

Uveal melanoma (UM) has emerged as one of the most common primary intraocular malignant tumors worldwide. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized as decisive factors in the progression and metastasis of UM, involving in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of UM. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of lncRNAs closely associated with EMT-related genes in the TCGA UM cohort, identifying 961 EMT-related lncRNAs.
