Background: One of the key challenges in tissue engineering area is the creation of biocompatible scaffolds that support cell growth and mimic the structural and mechanical properties of native tissues. Among various materials used for scaffold fabrication, composite materials based on biodegradable polymers reinforced with bioactive inorganic fillers have attracted significant attention due to their properties. One of the important problems with the preparation of composite electrospun fibers is the low filler content in the fiber.

The lacrimal gland (LG) is vital for ocular health, producing tears that lubricate and protect the eye. Dysfunction of the LG leads to aqueous-deficient dry eye disease (DED), significantly impacting quality of life. Current treatments mainly address symptoms rather than the underlying LG dysfunction, highlighting the need for regenerative therapies.

Tissue engineering employs the use of bioactive materials to facilitate the filling and acceleration of bone defect healing, thereby introducing novel concepts to the field of in situ bone repair. Some studies have shown that periosteum plays an important role in bone regeneration and repair. In this study, biomimetic periosteum-bone scaffolds were prepared by depositing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) electrospun fibers on the surface of the gelatin/chitosan cryogel to mimic the bone and periosteum structure, respectively.

The current clinical applications of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are limited to only a few specific indications. Locally controlled delivery of combinations of growth factors can be a promising strategy to improve BMP-based bone repair. However, the success of this approach requires the development of an effective release system and the correct choice of growth factors capable of enhancing BMP activity.
