Recent theoretical and experimental studies of the interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) have sparked great interest in its implementation into practical magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) devices, due to its capability to mediate long-range chiral spin textures. So far, experimental reports focused on the observation of interlayer DMI, leaving the development of strategies to control interlayer DMI's magnitude unaddressed. Here, we introduce an azimuthal symmetry engineering protocol capable of additive/subtractive tuning of interlayer DMI through the control of wedge deposition of separate layers and demonstrate its capability to mediate field-free spin-orbit torque (SOT) magnetization switching in both orthogonally magnetized and synthetic antiferromagnetically coupled systems. Furthermore, we showcase that the spatial inhomogeneity brought about by wedge deposition can be suppressed by specific azimuthal engineering design, ideal for practical implementation. Our findings provide guidelines for effective manipulations of interlayer DMI strength, beneficial for the future design of SOT-MRAM or other spintronic devices utilizing interlayer DMI.

Eliminating Skyrmion Hall Effect in Ferromagnetic Skyrmions.

Nano Lett

Skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE) remains an obstacle for the application of magnetic skyrmions. While methods have been established to cancel or compensate SkHE in artificial antiferromagnets and ferrimagnets, eliminating intrinsic SkHE in ferromagnets is still a big challenge. Here, we propose a strategy to eliminate SkHE by intercalating nonmagnetic elements into van der Waals bilayer ferromagnets featuring in-plane ferromagnetism.

This paper investigates the relationship among interlayer exchange coupling (IEC), Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and multilevel magnetization switching within a Co/Pt/Co heterostructure, where varying Pt thicknesses enable control over the coupling strength. Employing Brillouin Light Scattering to quantify the effective DMI, we explore its potential role in magnetization dynamics and multilevel magnetization switching. Experimental findings show four distinct resistance states under an external magnetic field and spin Hall effect related spin current.

Nonvolatile Multistate Manipulation of Topological Magnetism in Monolayer CrI through Quadruple-Well Ferroelectric Materials.

Beijing National Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China.

Nonvolatile multistate manipulation of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials holds promise for low dissipation, highly integrated, and versatile spintronic devices. Here, utilizing density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we report the realization of nonvolatile and multistate control of topological magnetism in monolayer CrI by constructing multiferroic heterojunctions with quadruple-well ferroelectric (FE) materials. The PtSnTe/CrI heterojunction exhibits multiple magnetic phases upon modulating FE polarization states of FE layers and interlayer sliding.

Seeking to enhance the strength of the interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (IL-DMI) through a combination of atomic and Rashba type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) we studied the strength and the thickness evolution of effective interlayer coupling in Co/Ag/Co trilayers by means of surface sensitive magneto-optical measurements that take advantage of the light penetration depth. Here, we report the observation of oscillatory, thickness-dependent chiral interaction between ferromagnetic layers. Despite the weakness of the Ag atomic SOC, the IL-DMI in our trilayers is orders of magnitude larger than that of known systems using heavy metals as a spacer except of recently reported -0.
