The controllable synthesis of spirooxindole-dihydrofurans and spirooxindole-benzazepines was developed through formal [3 + 2] and [5 + 2] cyclization reactions from 2-(2-oxoindolin-3-yl)malononitriles and -aminobenzaldehydes, respectively. A variety of spirooxindole-benzazepines were facilely constructed via a furan ring-open-involved hydride transfer/cyclization process. It is noteworthy that the application of the hydride-transfer-involved [5 + 2] cyclization strategy for construction of spirobenzazepines was unprecedented. In addition, the spiro - and -containing heterocycles were highly functionalized by amino, amide, and cyano groups, which were conducive to late-stage functionalization.

: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and debilitating mental disorder that has been linked to hyperhomocysteinemia and folate deficiency. These conditions are influenced by the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase () gene, which plays a crucial role in converting homocysteine to methionine and is essential for folate metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis, including serotonin. : This study explored the association between and polymorphisms among Saudi MDD patients attending the Erada Complex for Mental Health and Erada Services outpatient clinic in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The ecological niche separation of microbial interactions in forest ecosystems is critical to maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity and has yet to be comprehensively explored in microbial ecology. This study investigated the impacts of soil properties on microbial interactions and carbon metabolism potential in forest soils across 67 sites in China. Using redundancy analysis and random forest models, we identified soil pH and dissolved organic matter (DOM) aromaticity as the primary drivers of microbial interactions, representing abiotic conditions and resource niches, respectively.

Activation of Ca channels in Ca stores in organelles and the plasma membrane generates cytoplasmic calcium ([Ca]) signals that control almost every aspect of cell function, including metabolism, vesicle fusion and contraction. Mitochondria have a high capacity for Ca uptake and chelation, alongside efficient Ca release mechanisms. Still, mitochondria do not store Ca in a prolonged manner under physiological conditions and lack the capacity to generate global [Ca] signals.

Synthetic insecticides have been widely used for the prevention and control of disease vectors and agricultural pests. However, frequent uses of insecticides have resulted in the development of insecticide resistance in these insect pests. The resistance adversely affects the efficacy of insecticides, and seriously reduces the lifespan of insecticides.

Inflammation and oxidative stress play a pivotal role in COPD pathogenesis. Free fatty acids (FFA) as signaling molecules through a series of G-proteins coupled receptors, play an important role in regulation of the immune system and oxidative stress. For this reason, we decided to investigate the profile of FFA in the plasma in the COPD patients.
