Article Abstract
Despite the real-time, nonionizing, and cost-effective nature of ultrasound imaging, there is a dearth of methods to visualize two or more populations of contrast agents simultaneously─a technique known as multiplex imaging. Here, we present a new approach to multiplex ultrasound imaging using perfluorocarbon (PFC) nanodroplets. The nanodroplets, which undergo a liquid-to-gas phase transition in response to an acoustic trigger, act as activatable contrast agents. This work characterized the dynamic responses of two PFC nanodroplets with boiling points of 28 and 56 °C. These characteristic responses were then used to demonstrate that the relative concentrations of the two populations of PFC nanodroplets could be accurately measured in the same imaging volume within an average error of 1.1%. Overall, the findings indicate the potential of this approach for multiplex ultrasound imaging, allowing for the simultaneous visualization of multiple molecular targets simultaneously.
Knee osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative disease associated with pain and decreased mobility that affects advanced-age individuals, thus causing further debilitation. Radiofrequency ablation can benefit patients who are not ideal candidates for surgical intervention and for whom conservative management has been unsatisfactory. Currently, radiofrequency ablation is performed using either ultrasonography or fluoroscopy.
Despite the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, interventions such as laparoscopic liver surgery present unique challenges, like the significant anatomical differences between preoperative images and intraoperative scenes due to pneumoperitoneum, patient pose, and organ manipulation by surgical instruments. To address these challenges, a method for intraoperative three-dimensional reconstruction of the surgical scene, including vessels and tumors, without altering the surgical workflow, is proposed. Objective: To analyse the parameters of shear wave elastography (SWE) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in breast non-mass-like lesions (NMLs) and to evaluate the added diagnostic value of SWE and CEUS when combined with B-mode ultrasound (US) for differentiating NMLs.
Methods: A total of 118 NMLs from 115 patients underwent US, SWE, and CEUS examinations. The SWE parameter with the highest areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (Az) and independent variables of CEUS obtained by logistic regression were used to adjust the BI-RADS-US (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System for Ultrasound) classification.
