The recent discovery that defects in inter-organelle lipid transport are at the heart of several neurological and neurodegenerative disorders raises the challenge of identifying therapeutic strategies to correct lipid transport defects. This perspective highlights two potential strategies suggested by the study of lipid transport in budding yeast. In the first approach, small molecules are proposed that enhance the lipid transfer activity of proteins and thereby compensate for reduced transport. In the second approach, molecules that act as inter-organelle tethers could be used to create artificial contact sites and bypass the loss of endogenous contacts.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are the main enzymes handling bicarbonate in the different cell compartments. This study analyses the expression of CAs in roots of Arabidopsis thaliana demes differing in tolerance to bicarbonate: the tolerant A1 deme and the sensitive deme, T6. Exposure to 10 mM NaCl caused a transient depolarization of the root cell membranes, and in contrast, the supply of 10 mM NaHCO caused hyperpolarization.

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by insulin resistance and often worsened by obesity. Effective management involves the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) to assist with glycemic control and weight management. However, these drugs must be administered subcutaneously due to their low oral bioavailability.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most severe kidney complications and the primary contributor to end-stage renal disease on a global scale. It exacerbates the morbidity, mortality, and financial burden for individuals with diabetes. Isoquercitrin, a natural compound found in various plants, has demonstrated potential as an antidiabetic agent.

Plants can experience a lack of oxygen due to environmental conditions such as flooding events or intense microbial blooms in the soil, and from their own metabolic activities. The associated limit on aerobic respiration can be fatal. Therefore, plants have evolved sensing systems that monitor oxygen levels and trigger a suite of metabolic, physiological and developmental responses to endure, or potentially escape, these oxygen limiting conditions.
