Background: Blockage to divide downstream canals into upstream canals, into which tannery wastewater including a high concentration of trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] is directly discharged, has been constructed in Hazaribagh, a tannery built-up area in Bangladesh. However, there has been no study to verify the environmental significance of blockage construction for water pollution of Cr in nature.
Methods: Consecutive fixed area monitoring for a total of 164 water samples collected outside and inside Hazaribagh from 2014 to 2023 was carried out to clarify the effects of stagnant and flowable canal water in the presence or absence of blockage on Cr(III) and hexavalent Cr [Cr(VI)] concentrations.
Results: Since pollution of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in Buriganga River (outside Hazaribagh) was not serious, this study then focused on their pollution in canal water (inside Hazaribagh) in the nonblockage period, blockage construction period and blockage destruction period. As expected, the mean Cr(III) concentration in downstream canal water samples in the blockage construction period was more than 98% lower than that in the upstream canal water samples in the same period, while the concentrations were comparable in downstream and upstream canal water samples in the nonblockage period and blockage destruction period. Unexpectedly, the mean concentration of Cr(VI) in the upstream canal water samples in the blockage construction period was 38.6-fold and 3.3-fold higher than that in the downstream canal water samples and the Cr(VI) guideline value by the US-EPA, respectively.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated for the first time not only a merit of decreased Cr(III) pollution but also a demerit of increased Cr(VI) pollution in stagnant water derived from blockage construction in natural environments. This bitter lesson obtained by the enclosure of Cr(III)-polluted water is globally applicable for water pollution of Cr(III), which is used in various industries including the leather industry.

Objective: To establish the relevance of examining the internal organs for the presence of diatom plankton after drowning in the waters of the White Sea.
Material And Methods: We studied the biological material (fragments of lungs and kidneys) from the corpses of people found in the waters of the Kemskaya Bay and Onega Bay of the White Sea and waters from different areas of the White Sea for the presence of diatoms.
Results: In all cases of drowning in the waters of the White Sea (in the area of the city of Belomorsk and the Kem skerries), marine and freshwater diatoms were found in the lungs and kidneys of the deceased in quantities sufficient to diagnose death from drowning in water.

Background: Environmental contamination with eggs significantly impacts on opisthorchiasis transmission and disease control. This study assessed egg contamination in underwater sediments from canals and aimed to reduce transmission in egg-positive and downstream communities by controlling human opisthorchiasis in endemic area of Northeast Thailand.
Methods: Sediment samples from 14 sites in UdonThani municipality were determined for eggs.

The occurrence of chemical effluents in different water bodies is an emerging concern. However, the effect of laboratory effluents on the canal ecosystem in Bangladesh is largely unknown. In this study, we collected 10 components of the canal ecosystem including sediments, water, fish, crabs, snails, phytoplanktons, and weeds specifically from canals that directly receive laboratory effluents.

This comprehensive review explores the emergence of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO-NPs) as versatile nanomaterials, particularly exploring their biogenic synthesis methods through different biological entities such as plants, bacteria, fungi, viruses, and algae. These biological entities provide eco-friendly, cost-effective, biocompatible, and rapid methods for TiO-NP synthesis to overcome the disadvantages of traditional approaches. TiO-NPs have distinctive properties, including high surface area, stability, UV protection, and photocatalytic activity, which enable diverse applications.

Correlation and cluster analysis protocols for analyzing multiple-parameter water-quality data sets are presented and demonstrated. A novel cluster analysis methodology is developed that identifies parameters that are either directly or indirectly correlated. Application of these analyses was demonstrated using multi-parameter water-quality measurements in Biscayne Bay and the primary drainage canals in South Florida.
