: VATS segmentectomy has been proven to be effective in the treatment of stage I NSCLC, but its technical complexity remains one of the most challenging aspects for thoracic surgeons. Furthermore, 3D-CT reconstruction images can help in planning and performing surgical procedures. In this paper, we present our personal experience of 11 VATS anatomical resections performed after accurate pre-operative planning with 3D reconstructions. : A 3D virtual model of the lungs, airways, and vasculature was obtained, starting from a 1.25 mm 3-phase contrast CT scan, and the original images were used for the semi-automatic segmentation of the lung parenchyma, airways, and tumor. : Six males and five females were included in this study. The median diameter of the pulmonary lesion at the pre-operative chest CT scan was 20 mm. The surgical indication was confirmed in seven patients: in three cases, a lobectomy, instead of a segmentectomy, was needed due to intraoperative findings of nodal metastasis. Meanwhile, only in one case, we performed a lobectomy because of inadequate surgical resection margins. Skin-to-skin operative average time was 142 (IQR 1-3 105-182.5) min. The median post-operative stay was 6 (IQR 1-3 3.5-7) days. The mean value of the closest surgical margin was 13.7 mm. : Image-guided reconstructions are a useful tool for surgeons to perform complex resections in order to spare healthy parenchyma and to ensure disease-free margins. Nevertheless, human skill and surgeon experience still remain fundamental for the final decisions regarding the proper resection to perform.

Effectiveness of bi-monthly long-acting injectable cabotegravir and rilpivirine as maintenance treatment for HIV-1 in the Netherlands: results from the Dutch ATHENA national observational cohort.

Lancet HIV

January 2025

Stichting HIV Monitoring, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Department of Infectious Diseases, Amsterdam Infection & Immunity Institute, Amsterdam University Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Background: Real-world data showing the long-term effectiveness of long-acting injectable cabotegravir and rilpivirine are scarce. We assessed the effectiveness of cabotegravir and rilpivirine in all individuals who switched to cabotegravir and rilpivirine in the Netherlands.

Methods: We used data from the ATHENA cohort, an ongoing observational nationwide HIV cohort in the Netherlands.

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of digital multidisciplinary conferences (MDCs) in preventing imaging-related quality management (QM) events during the coronavirus-disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic. COVID-19 challenged interdisciplinary exchange and QM measures for patient safety. Regular MDCs between radiologists and intensive care unit (ICU) physicians, introduced in our hospital in 2018, enable re-evaluation of imaging examinations and bilateral feedback.

Background: Electronic health (e-Health) interventions may increase effectiveness and address limitations of conventional in-person childhood obesity treatment programs. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a 10-week e-Health (web-based) healthy lifestyle program for school-aged children with overweight/obesity.

Methods: In this randomised control trial (RCT), families with children aged 7-13 years with overweight/obesity (body mass index, BMI ≥ 85th percentile), living in Victoria, Australia, were recruited.

Clinical Division of Gynecological Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical University of Vienna, 1090 Vienna, Austria.

Prolactin levels have been shown to influence metabolic outcomes, including insulin resistance. Metformin is known to be beneficial in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. PCOS women might react differently to metformin treatment depending on their baseline prolactin levels.

The effect of concurrent acetylsalicylic acid on hemorrhagic complications during percutaneous image-guided lung biopsy.

Respir Med Res

December 2024

Department of Thoracic Oncology, Pleural Diseases and Interventional Pulmonology, Marseille, France.

Background: CT-guided trans-thoracic lung biopsy (CT-TTLB) is efficient and widely used to diagnose pulmonary nodules. After pneumothorax, the second most frequent complication is hemoptysis, which can be life-threatening. These patients often have comorbidities and are on acetylsalicylic-acid (ASA) therapy.
