Edge Magnetism in MoS Nanoribbons: Insights from a Simple One-Dimensional Model.

Edge magnetism in zigzag nanoribbons of monolayer MoS2 has been investigated with both density functional theory and a tight-binding plus Hubbard (TB+) Hamiltonian. Both methods revealed that one band crossing the Fermi level is more strongly influenced by spin polarization than any other bands. This band originates from states localized on the sulfur edge of the nanoribbon. Its dispersion closely resembles that of the energy branch obtained in a linear chain of atoms with first-neighbor interaction. By exploiting this resemblance, a toy model has been designed to study the energetics of different spin configurations of the nanoribbon edge.

A new series of 222 adelite-type Co(GeO)(OH) ( = La-Sm) single crystals were grown by a high-temperature, high-pressure hydrothermal method (650 °C and 100 MPa). Single-crystal diffraction refinements yielded chiral one-dimensional (1D) chains of Co along the axis with an average 2.98 Å separation between Co centers in the [CoO(OH)] ribbon chains.

Global Aromatic Ring Currents in Neutral Porphyrin Nanobelts.

The ability of a ring-shaped molecule to sustain a global aromatic or antiaromatic ring current when placed in a magnetic field indicates that its electronic wave function is coherently delocalized around its whole circumference. Large molecules that display this behavior are attractive components for molecular electronic devices, but this phenomenon is rare in neutral molecules with circuits of more than 40 π-electrons. Here, we use theoretical methods to investigate how the global ring currents evolve with increasing ring size in cyclic molecular nanobelts built from edge-fused porphyrins.

Synthesis and Characterization of UV-Curable Resin with High Refractive Index for a Luminance-Enhancing Prism Film.

A novel monomer, 9-bis[4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl]fluorene di(mercaptopropionate), with a highly refractive index, purity, and excellent UV-curable properties, is synthesized through an optimized Fischer esterification process, reacting 9,9-bis[4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl]fluorene with 3-mercaptopropionic acid. The structural characterization of this monomer is performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The synthesis conditions are optimized using a design-of-experiments approach.
