Background: Two jewel beetle species native to Europe, the cypress jewel beetle, (, ) L. (Buprestidae, Coleoptera), and the sinuate pear tree borer, Olivier (Buprestidae, Coleoptera), are key pests of ornamental thuja and junipers and of orchard and ornamental rosaceous trees, respectively. Although chemical control measures are available, due to the beetles' small size, agility, and cryptic lifestyle at the larval stage, efficient tools for their detection and monitoring are missing. Consequently, by the time emerging jewel beetle adults are noticed, the trees are typically significantly damaged.

Methods: Thus, the aim of this study was to initiate the development of monitoring traps. Transparent, light green, and purple sticky sheets and multifunnel traps were compared in field experiments in Hungary.

Results: Light green and transparent sticky traps caught more and jewel beetles than non-sticky multifunnel traps, regardless of the larger size of the colored surface of the funnel traps.

Conclusions: Although light green sticky sheets turned out to be optimal for both species, using transparent sheets can reduce catches of non-target insects. The key to the effectiveness of sticky traps, despite their reduced suitability for quantitative comparisons, may lie in the behavioral responses of the beetles to the optical features of the traps.

Structural Color of Partially Deacetylated Chitin Nanowhisker Film Inspired by Jewel Beetle.

Materials (Basel)

November 2024

Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere, Kyoto University, Uji 611-0011, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Nanochitin is created from crab shells, a food waste product, and ongoing research explores its various applications.
  • By sonicating nanochitin in water, short nanowhiskers are produced that self-assemble into a multilayered film, which can manipulate light to create bright structural colors.
  • The film's structural colors can indicate freshness in food sensors and offer a sustainable alternative to dyes in cosmetics due to chitin's biocompatibility and non-toxic nature.

Article Synopsis
  • The apple jewel beetle (AJB) is a severe pest threatening apple orchards and wild apple forests in China, particularly in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
  • Global warming is expected to expand the geographical range of the AJB, with forecasts showing suitable regions in China could increase by 1.11-1.34 times by the 2050s and 2070s.
  • Key climatic factors influencing the AJB's distribution include November maximum temperatures and precipitation in January, highlighting the need for urgent monitoring and management to safeguard apple production.

Investigation of hybrid Freeman maple resistance to Chrysobothris flatheaded borers (Coleoptera: Buprestidae).

Environ Entomol

December 2024

Department of Agricultural and Environmental Science, Otis L. Floyd Nursery Research Center, Tennessee State University, McMinnville, TN, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Red maples are popular shade trees in the U.S., admired for their beautiful fall colors and rapid growth, but they are severely impacted by flatheaded borers, especially in stressed or newly planted trees.
  • A study compared three borer-susceptible red maple cultivars with a potentially resistant Freeman maple hybrid 'Autumn Blaze,' focusing on their traits under normal and herbicide-stressed conditions.
  • The hybrid showed faster growth and different mineral concentrations, indicating potential borer resistance, but further research is needed to fully understand these traits and their relationship to borer susceptibility.
