New Strategies for Remnant Ear Treatment in Microtia Reconstruction Based on Morphometric Studies.

Objective: Given the lack of specific evaluation indices, it is difficult to determine whether to transpose or abandon remnant ears in lobule-type microtia reconstruction. The authors illuminate referable parameters beneficial for proper treatment of remnant ear in an efficient manner.

Methods: A series of 359 lobule-type microtia patients underwent autogenous costal cartilage auricular reconstruction between 2016 and 2021. Fourteen measuring points and defined distances as well as six ratios of specific distances based on position, plumpness, similarity and the width-to-length ratio of the remnant ear have been described, and relevant tactics for appropriate treatments are introduced.

Results: Definite morphometric results contribute to attaining satisfactory contours of reconstructed auricles with harmonious earlobes, which exhibit highly similar dimensions and appearances compared to the contralateral normal ears.

Conclusion: With the help of the proposed locating points and measuring approaches, the procedure of remnant ear treatment is systematically clarified. This technique ensures operation safety and contributes to the aesthetic contour of the auricle.

Ecchordosis physaliphora (EP) is a benign notochordal remnant most commonly encountered in the skull base. In opposition to typical cases of its invasive counterpart, that is, chordoma, EP does not show T1-enhancement. Now, we describe three patients with EP, discovered on delayed contrast-enhanced 3D FLAIR performed for endolymphatic hydrops imaging in suspected Menière's disease.

Background: Microtia with constricted ear features represents a challenging congenital deformity characterized by the variable shape and large volume of the remnant cartilage and skin involved. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a method using helix costal cartilage scaffold and postauricular flap advancement for the correction.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed the clinical and postoperative data of 121 patients diagnosed with microtia and constricted ear features, treated at our institution between January 2020 and January 2023.

Mirror Ear: A Rare Case of Polyotia.

Kathmandu Univ Med J (KUMJ)

September 2024

Department of Pathology, Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu University Hospital, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, Dhulikhel, Kavre, Nepal.

Article Synopsis
  • Polyotia, also known as mirror ear or accessory ear, is a rare external ear anomaly where an extra auricle closely resembles a real ear rather than just a small skin tag, with less than 30 cases reported so far.
  • Two cases of polyotia were successfully treated at Dhulikhel Hospital, involving an 8-year-old and a 14-year-old boy, each with a large accessory auricle on different sides, that mirrored the main auricle.
  • The surgical correction involved carefully removing the extra cartilage and skin, reshaping it to fill gaps, and reconstructing the tragus using a graft.
