Pediatric liver transplant recipients are a high-risk group for the development of adenovirus hepatitis and other manifestations of disseminated adenoviral disease. The risk is greatest during periods of increased immunosuppression, including immediately post-transplantation and following treatment for rejection. Manifestations of adenovirus hepatitis are heterogeneous with a wide spectrum of clinical severity, ranging from mild, focal disease to fulminant liver failure. Here we report a case of liver transplantation-associated adenovirus hepatitis presenting with fever and multifocal liver lesions. The diagnosis was not clinically suspected due to atypical imaging findings and pathology. Non-targeted metagenomic sequencing of plasma cell-free DNA facilitated and expedited the diagnosis. Confirmatory conventional testing was obtained, allowing for appropriate initiation of targeted treatment in this patient.

Accordingly, emerging researchers have focused on finding novel therapeutic/preventive strategies for this disorder. Moreover, previous studies have shown that celiac patients, especially untreated subjects, are at increased risk of developing viral and bacterial infections, which can become a challenge for the clinician.

The highly virulent genotype fowl adenovirus 4 (FAdV-4), associated with severe hydropericardium hepatitis syndrome (HHS) in poultry from China, is characterized by a large deletion of 1966 bp (1966-del), including losses of ORF19 and ORF27. However, how this virus originated remains unclear. In this study, a novel FAdV-4 strain, HNU-XXY-2019, from diseased chickens, which has a genome size of 45669 bp and is approximately 1966 bp longer than the known FAdV-4 genome from China, was isolated and characterized.

Pre-immunization with inactivated antigens has been developed as an alternative to the use of 'dirty' mice, which in contrast to specific pathogen free (SPF) mice, harbour a range of pathogens. Within certain research areas, such mice are considered better models for humans than SPF mice, as they have an immune system that better mirrors human immunity. We inactivated murine adenovirus type 1 (FL), minute virus of mice, mouse hepatitis virus (A59), respirovirus muris (Sendai), Theiler's encephalomyelitis virus (GD7) and by ultraviolet irradiation.
