Studies using stool samples suggest that non-sugar sweetener (NSS) consumption affects gut microbiome composition. However, stool does not represent the entire gut. We analyzed the duodenal luminal microbiome in subjects consuming non-aspartame non-sugar sweeteners (NANS, N = 35), aspartame only (ASP, N = 9), and controls (CON, N = 55) and the stool microbiome in a subset (N = 40). Duodenal alpha diversity was decreased in NANS vs. CON. Duodenal relative abundance (RA) of , , and (all phylum Proteobacteria) was lower in both NANS and ASP vs. CON, whereas stool RA of , , and was increased in both NANS and ASP vs. CON. Predicted duodenal microbial metabolic pathways altered in NANS vs. CON included polysaccharides biosynthesis and D-galactose degradation, whereas cylindrospermopsin biosynthesis was significantly enriched in ASP vs. CON. These findings suggest that consuming non-sugar sweeteners may significantly alter microbiome composition and function in the metabolically active small bowel, with different alterations seen in stool.

Unlabelled: L-asparaginase (L-asp) is an antineoplastic drug used in Leukemia and Lymphoma treatment protocols. Alterations in lipid metabolism have been reported in 10-50% of children treated with L-Asp.

Objective: To report an unusual complication of lipid metabolism associated with the use of L-Asp.

[Left atrial appendage closure guided with intracardiac echocardiographic probe via transesophageal route].

G Ital Cardiol (Rome)

Divisione di Cardiologia, Presidio Ospedaliero Umberto I, ASP 8 di Siracusa, Siracusa.

Article Synopsis
  • * Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is a viable option for these patients, and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is the traditional imaging method to assist in this procedure, although it typically requires general anesthesia, which poses additional risks for older adults.
  • * Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) offers a "minimalist approach" that avoids anesthesia but has issues with image quality; recently, using ICE in conjunction with TEE (ICE-TEE) has

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates myocardial T1 and T2 values in patients with beta-thalassemia intermedia (β-TI) for the first time, aiming to identify myocardial involvement and its correlation with demographic and clinical factors.
  • 42 β-TI patients were compared to age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers and patients with thalassemia major, using advanced imaging techniques to assess heart function and iron overload.
  • Results indicated that β-TI patients had higher left ventricular T2 and T1 values compared to healthy individuals and thalassemia major patients, with female gender showing a significant association with increased values in β-TI patients.

: This multicenter, retrospective, population-based, matched-cohort study compared clinical characteristics and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, including hepatic, pancreatic, and cardiac iron levels and cardiac function, between 135 adult regularly transfused thalassemia intermedia (TI) patients (44.73 ± 12.16 years, 77 females) and 135 age- and sex-matched thalassemia major (TM) patients (43.

Introduction: A multitude of variables influence the healing of tooth extraction wounds, and delayed or non-healing extraction wounds might complicate later prosthodontic therapy. In this research, we analyzed the effects of systemic clopidogrel and aspirin alone or in combination on the healing of tooth extraction wounds in mice in order to provide experimental evidence for the healing of extraction wounds in patients who are clinically treated with the two medicines.

Methods: 7-week-old ICR mice were randomly divided into four groups: control group (CON), clopidogrel group (CLOP), aspirin group (ASP), and clopidogrel combined with aspirin group (CLOP + ASP); left upper first molar was extracted, after which mice in 1 week of adaptive feeding, CLOP/ASP/CLOP + ASP groups were respectively administered with clopidogrel (10 mg/kg/d), aspirin (15 mg/kg/d), clopidogrel (10 mg/kg/d)+aspirin (15 mg/kg/d), and the control group was given an equal amount of 0.
