Plants emit volatiles as signals to trigger broad physiological responses, including airborne defense (AD). Gong et al. (Nature 2023; 622: 139-145) recently reported the genetic framework of how plants use AD to combat aphids and viruses. The study elucidates the mutualistic relationships between aphids and the viruses they transmit, revealing the broad biological and ecological significance of AD.

Animals often eavesdrop on other species' alarm calls to gain information about danger, but this can allow for deception by callers. Such deception often uses 'aerial' alarm calls, which normally warn of airborne predators and prompt immediate fleeing. The calls are deceptive if they are given when no flying predator is present and the caller benefits from the victim's response, typically by gaining food dropped when the listener flees.

In radon pollution control, materials with radon adsorbing characteristics will significantly affect the migration and release of radon. In this paper, radon adsorbing medium (activated carbon particles) is proposed to be added to the building foundation granular filling layer as a radon adsorbing layer to alleviate indoor radon pollution. Radon exhalation rate is an important physical quantity used to evaluate the radon exhalation capacity of materials.

The rapid growth in drone air traffic calls for enhanced radar surveillance systems to ensure reliable detection in challenging conditions. Increasing radar scattering cross-section can greatly improve detection reliability in civilian applications. Here, we introduce a concept of evolutionarily designed metamaterials in the form of multilayer stacks of arrays, featuring strongly coupled electric and magnetic resonators.

Herbivore-induced plant volatiles act as danger signals to prime defense responses in neighboring plants, yet in many cases the mechanism behind this priming is not known. Volatile signals may be recognized directly by receptors and/or converted into other active compounds. Here we investigate the metabolic fate of volatile indole, a known priming signal in maize (Zea mays), to determine if its conversion to other compounds could play a role in its priming of defenses.

This study investigates the effectiveness of electrospun nanofibrous filters in capturing polydisperse virus-containing aerosols and the subsequent release of viruses, in comparison with standard commercial filters used in respirators, military gas masks, and devices for airborne virus sampling. We assessed the performance of these filters in capturing and releasing polydisperse aerosols containing MS2 bacteriophage, as well as in their ability to filter monodisperse dioctyl phthalate aerosols measuring 0.185 μm and 0.
