The slow formation of anammox biofilms presents a bottleneck for resolving anammox bacterial loss and achieving stable performance in biofilm-based partial denitrification-anammox (PD-A) processes. This study utilized iron-modified (K1/FeO NPs) carriers, which were prepared and used for the first time in PD-A processes. Parallel moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) indicated that iron-modified carriers facilitated the formation of biofilms at a faster rate than K1 carriers, consequently improving the nitrogen removal performance of the process by over 40 %. 16S rDNA analysis showed that anammox bacteria were approximately four times more abundant in the iron-modified carrier biofilm than in the K1 carrier biofilm. XPS and zeta potential analysis suggested that the improved microbial affinity of the iron-modified carrier surface caused this. As a result, the iron-modified carriers facilitated the formation of anammox biofilms and enhanced PD-A performance.

The pollution of nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals in surface water is becoming more and more serious, affecting the safety of water quality. In this study, three biofilters were constructed using iron-modified red soil-based filler carriers (RSC, nano-FeO@RSC, and FeCO@RSC) combined with strain Zoogloea sp. ZP7 to simultaneously remove nitrate (NO-N), phosphate (PO-P), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn).

Morin is an antioxidant and anticancer flavonoid, extracted from natural sources, that may exert beneficial effects for several pathologies. Despite this, the administration of morin represents a challenge due to its low aqueous solubility. Mesoporous silica materials have emerged as biocompatible tools for drug delivery, as their pore size can be modulated for maximum surface area to volume ratio.

The problem of nitrogen removal in eutrophic water needs to be solved. Two new autotrophic nitrogen removal technologies, ammonia oxidation coupled with Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) and Nitrate-dependent Fe(II) oxidation (NDFO), have been shown to have the potential to treat eutrophic water. However, the continuous addition of iron sources not only costs more, but also leads to sludge mineralization.

The use of lignin carbon as an adsorbent for the adsorption of phosphates from wastewater is a promising technology. However, most lignin carbon-based adsorbents still suffer from low adsorption efficiency and poor selectivity. Herein, a novel FeLaO-modified sulfomethylated lignin (SL) biochar adsorbent (FLO@CSL) was prepared for phosphate removal.
