The exorbitant cost of Pt-based electrocatalysts and the poor durability of non-noble metal electrocatalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells limited their practical application. Here, FeN active sites electronically coupled with PtFe alloys (PtFe-FeNC) were successfully prepared by a vapor deposition strategy as an ultralow Pt loading (0.64 wt %) hybrid electrocatalyst. The FeN sites on the FeNC matrix are able to effectively anchor the PtFe alloys, thus inhibiting their aggregation during long-life cycling. These PtFe alloys, in turn, can efficiently restrain the leaching of the FeN sites from the FeNC matrix. Thus, the PtFe-FeNC demonstrated an improved Pt mass activity of 2.33 A mg at 0.9 V toward oxygen reduction reaction, which is 12.9 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.18 A mg). It demonstrated great stability, with the Pt mass activity decreasing by only 9.4% after 70,000 cycles. Importantly, the fuel cell with an ultralow Pt loading in the cathode (0.012 mg cm) displays a high Pt mass activity of 1.75 A mg at 0.9 V, which is significantly better than commercial MEA (0.25 A mg). Interestingly, PtFe-FeNC catalysts possess enhanced durability, exhibiting a 12.5% decrease in peak power density compared to the 51.7% decrease of FeNC.

Article Synopsis
  • Ordered intermetallic nanocatalysts supported on high-surface-area materials show significantly improved catalytic activity and stability compared to random alloys.
  • Synthesizing these ultrafine nanocatalysts has been difficult due to high temperatures causing sintering and phase separation, but a new method has been developed that effectively prevents these issues even at temperatures up to 1000 °C.
  • The researchers successfully created a library of intermetallic nanocatalysts, highlighting the exceptional performance of PtFe nanocatalysts, which outperformed traditional platinum catalysts and could lead to advancements in industrial applications.

This paper presents the results of an evaluation of corrosion properties of PEO pretreated AlMg3 aluminum alloy samples with polymer coatings obtained by dip-coating in a suspension of superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene (SPTFE) in a solution of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone at different PVDF:SPTFE ratios (1:1, 1:3, 1:5, and 1:10). The electrochemical tests showed that samples with a coating formed at a ratio of PVDF to SPTFE of 1:5 possessed the best corrosion properties. The corrosion current density of these samples was more than five orders of magnitude lower than this parameter for bare aluminum alloy.

This study investigates the feasibility of using an Al-Si eutectic alloy as a reactive fuel in energetic mixtures. Al-Si eutectic alloy powders were obtained from secondary resources and ground to a particle size of less than 100 μm. We examined these powders' burning characteristics and thermal properties compared to pure Al powder.

Numerical analysis of blood flow in a branched modular stent-graft for aneurysms covering all zones of the aortic arch.

Due to the anatomical complexity of the aortic arch for the development of stent-grafts for total repair, this region remains without a validated and routinely used endovascular option. In this work, a modular stent-graft for aneurysms that covers all aortic arch zones, proposed by us and previously structurally evaluated, was evaluated from the point of view of haemodynamics using fluid-structural numerical simulations. Blood was assumed to be non-Newtonian shear-thinning using the Carreau model, and the arterial wall was assumed to be anisotropic hyperelastic using the Holzapfel model.
