AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Ash is a testing index with both health inspection value and quality decision value, and it is an essential detection item in the import and export trade of tea. To realize the rapid and effective quantitative analysis of ash content in tea, this study proposed the use of a homemade miniature near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis for the rapid detection of ash content in black tea. First, NIR data of black tea samples from different countries were acquired and optimized by the spectral preprocessing method. Then, the optimized pre-processed spectral data were used as features, and four feature wavelength selection algorithms, such as competitive adaptive reweighted sampling, iteratively retaining informative variables (IRIV), variable combination population analysis (VCPA)-IRIV, and interval variable iterative space shrinkage approach (IVISSA), were utilized to optimize the feature spectra. Finally, the support vector machine regression (SVR) algorithm was employed to construct the quantitative models of ash content in black tea by combining the optimal wavelengths obtained from the four feature selection methods mentioned above. The experimental results showed that the IVISSA-SVR model had the best performance, with correlation coefficient (R), root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP), and relative prediction deviation (RPD) of 0.9546, 0.0192, and 5.59 for the prediction set, respectively. The results demonstrate that a miniature NIR sensing system combined with chemometrics as an effective analytical tool can realize the rapid detection of ash content in black tea.

Nano-encapsulated Yucca extract as feed additives: Ruminal greenhouse gas emissions of three forages.

AMB Express

December 2024

Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, El Cerrillo Piedras Blancas, 50295, Toluca, Estado de México, Mexico.

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock is a crucial step towards mitigating the impact of climate change and improving environmental sustainability in agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Yucca schidigera extract, chitosan, and chitosan nanoparticles as feed additives on in vitro GHG emissions and fermentation profiles in ruminal fluid from bulls. Total gas, CH, CO, and HS emissions (up to 48 h), rumen fermentation profiles, and CH conversion efficiency were measured using standard protocols.

Coal mined in the shut-down Raša mine in Istria, Croatia had a high organic sulphur content. What has remained of its local combustion is a coal and ash waste (legacy site) whose trace element and radionuclide composition in soil has enduring consequences for the environment. The aim of this study was to follow up on previous research and investigate the potential impact on surrounding soil and local residents by characterising the site's ash and soil samples collected in two field campaigns.

Unlabelled: The human population is steadily increasing and new alternative protein sources are necessary to secure food safety. There is a growing interest in macroalgae, or seaweed, as an alternative food source as they are rich in nutrients, minerals and carbohydrates. Among the diverse species of macroalga, , a red seaweed of growing interest due to its high protein content, represents a potential candidate for contributing to food security and animal feed.

Simplifying Wheat Quality Assessment: Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Analysis of Variance Simultaneous Component Analysis to Study Regional and Annual Effects.

ACS Meas Sci Au

December 2024

Department of Agrobiotechnology, IFA-Tulln, Institute of Bioanalytics and Agro-Metabolomics, BOKU University, Konrad-Lorenz-Str. 20, 3430 Tulln an der Donau, Austria.

Assessing the quality of wheat, one of humanity's most important crops, in a straightforward manner, is essential. In this study, analysis of variance (ANOVA) simultaneous component analysis (ASCA) paired with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used as an easy-to-implement and environmentally friendly tool for this purpose. The capabilities of combining NIRS with ASCA were demonstrated by studying the effects of sampling site and year on the quality of 180 Austrian wheat samples across four sites over 3 years.

Biomass is a key element in biofuels which can be defined as a fuel produced through contemporary biological processes, and its increased use can support the EU's aims of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Information on the nature and the quality of the biomass or biofuel is important in order to support the optimization of their combustion with respect to realizing higher efficiencies and lower emissions during energy production. Three reference materials were produced by a collaborative approach among national metrology institutes and designated institutes within the scope of the EMPIR project: BIOFMET.
