Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition of multifactorial origin, is a major cause of irreversible vision loss in industrialized countries. The dry late stage of the disease, known as geographic atrophy (GA), is characterized by progressive loss of photoreceptor cells and retinal pigment epithelial cells in the central retina. An estimated 300 000 to 550 000 people in Germany suffer from GA.

Introduction: Diabetic macular oedema (DMO), a serious ocular complication of diabetic retinopathy (DR), is a leading cause of vision impairment worldwide. If left untreated or inadequately treated, DMO can lead to irreversible vision loss and blindness. Intravitreal injections using antivascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) and laser are the current standard of treatment for DMO.

Clinical Relevance: There are many recognised risk factors for retinal vein occlusions. It is plausible that musicians who play wind instruments or use their voice as their primary instrument may be at increased risk of branch retinal vein occlusions through repeated Valsalva manoeuvre.
Background: Repeated valsalva manoeuvres are commonly performed by musicians using high resistance wind instruments.

Purpose: Alteration of visual acuity in wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is mostly driven by vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A)-induced edema from leaky newly forming blood vessels below the retina layers. To date, all therapies aimed at alleviation of this process have relied on inhibition of VEGF-A activity. Although effective in preventing vascular leak and edema, this approach also leads to the loss of normal vasculature and multiple related side effects.

Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a major complication of surgical repair for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment (RRD). Methotrexate (MTX), a folate antimetabolite, has shown promise in targeting the pathological processes involved in PVR, such as cell proliferation inhibition, fibrosis and anti-inflammation. Systematic review examines the use of MTX in PVR by analysing different administration methods and outcomes.
