by Robert Chambers, a Scottish publisher and popular writer, was one of the most influential evolutionary works in the pre-Darwinian age. This article examines the circumstances in which this treatise was published in Russia in 1863 and went through a second printing in 1868. was translated into Russian by Alexander Palkhovsky (1831-1907), a former medical student, ideologically close to the nihilist movement, and was initially printed by the radical publisher Anatoly Cherenin, later prosecuted for his ties with revolutionary circles. was translated not from the English original, but from a German translation by Karl Vogt. Given the popularity of German materialism among Russian radicals in the 1860s, association with Vogt's name did much to draw attention to the translation. Contrary to Vogt, who took an anti-evolutionary stance while translating , Palkhovsky and other nihilists ardently supported evolution in the hope that it would help them combat religious belief. Praising the author of for his evolutionary views, Russian radicals at the same time criticized him for numerous references to God, teleological thinking and blindness to social problems. In their attempts to put into service, Russian nihilists were similar to English freethinkers of the 1840s. The study of how was read and perceived in Russia provides a better understanding of the cross-cultural reception of evolutionary ideas on the eve of Darwin's

Gas phase bond dissociation energies (BDE) O-H/N-H in hydroquinone (HQ), 4-aminophenol (AP), 1,4-phenylenediamine (PDA), 4-hydroxydiphenylamine (HDPA), N,N'-diphenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (DPPDA) as well as in their phenoxyl/aminyl radicals have been determined using a combined technique of quantum chemical calculation. The technique included a series of DFT (PBE1PBE, TPSSTPSS, M06-2X), ab initio (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) methods with valence 3ξ-basis sets, composite methods of Gaussian family (G4) and Weizmann theory with ab initio Brueckner Doubles (W1BD), as well as reference reactions of different levels of structural similarity. W1BD method was used in combination with isodesmic reactions for BDE estimation (kJ∙mol) of compounds with the only aromatic fragment: BDE = 352.

Nickel is both an important nutrient and an ecotoxicant for plants. Organic ligands, such as L-histidine (His), play a key role in Ni detoxification. Here, we show that His (added together with 0.

Photocrosslinkable hydrogels based on hyaluronic acid are promising biomaterials high in demand in tissue engineering. Typically, hydrogels are photocured under the action of UV or blue light strongly absorbed by biotissues, which limits prototyping under living organism conditions. To overcome this limitation, we propose the derivatives of well-known photosensitizers, namely chlorin , chlorin and phthalocyanine, as those for radical polymerization in the transparency window of biotissues.

Light induced release of cisplatin from Pt(IV) prodrugs is a promising tool for precise spatiotemporal control over the antiproliferative activity of Pt-based chemotherapeutic drugs. A combination of light-controlled chemotherapy (PACT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) in one molecule has the potential to overcome crucial drawbacks of both Pt-based chemotherapy and PDT via a synergetic effect. Herein we report green-light-activated Pt(IV) prodrug GreenPt with BODIPY-based photosentitizer in the axial position with an incredible high light response and singlet oxygen generation ability.

However, about 40% of patients with CTEPH are inoperable due to distal pulmonary vascular lesions or the severity of hemodynamic disorders. Almost 30% of patients with CTEPH experience persistent or recurrent pulmonary hypertension after surgery, that requires a drug treatment with PAH-specific drugs.
