Background: With early detection and improvements in systemic and local therapies, millions of people are surviving cancer, but for some at a high cost. In some cancer types, cardiovascular disease now competes with recurrent cancer as the cause of death. Traditional care models, in which the cardiologist or oncologist assess patients individually, do not address complex cancer and cardiovascular needs.

Translation, validation, and reliability of the Modified Occupational Questionnaire into Bahasa Melayu among older persons in Malaysia.

February 2025

Centre for Rehabilitation and Special Needs Studies, Occupational Therapy Programme, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz, Kuala Lumpur, 50300, Malaysia.

Introduction: A Modified Occupational Questionnaire (MOQ) is a self-report questionnaire that records the occupational engagement of an individual hourly, focusing on activity category, reason for doing the activity, value to self, and value to society. Understanding the patterns of occupational engagement and meaningful time use in older persons is crucial for predicting physical and psychological health and establishing occupation-based interventions to support healthy aging. However, the MOQ, originally developed in an English-speaking country and may potentially be less suitable for Malaysian older persons, who are predominantly Malay-speaking and have distinct cultural adaptations.

Mitochondrial segmentation and function prediction in live-cell images with deep learning.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Frontiers Science Center for Flexible Electronics, Xi'an Institute of Flexible Electronics (IFE) and Xi'an Institute of Biomedical Materials & Engineering, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an, China.

Mitochondrial morphology and function are intrinsically linked, indicating the opportunity to predict functions by analyzing morphological features in live-cell imaging. Herein, we introduce MoDL, a deep learning algorithm for mitochondrial image segmentation and function prediction. Trained on a dataset of 20,000 manually labeled mitochondria from super-resolution (SR) images, MoDL achieves superior segmentation accuracy, enabling comprehensive morphological analysis.

Eco-anxiety, climate change and the 'bottom billion': a plea for better understanding.

BMJ Ment Health

January 2025

National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, Australian National University, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

Climate change poses enormous, rapidly increasing risks to human well-being that remain poorly appreciated. The growing understanding of this threat has generated a phenomenon often called 'eco-anxiety'. Eco-anxiety (and its synonyms) is best documented in the Global North, mostly among people who are better educated and whose reasons for concern are both altruistic and self-interested.
