We introduce a new general methodological approach for accurately and consistently retrieving a large set of patents related to specific technologies. We build upon the automated patent landscaping algorithm by incorporating a tractable amount of human supervision to improve the accuracy and consistency of our results. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by applying it to six novel and representative technologies: additive manufacturing, blockchain, computer vision, genome editing, hydrogen storage, and self-driving vehicles.

A novel rapalog shows improved safety vs. efficacy in a human organoid model of polycystic kidney disease.

Stem Cell Reports

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is a therapeutic target in polycystic kidney disease (PKD), but mTOR inhibitors such as everolimus have failed to show efficacy at tolerated doses in clinical trials. Here, we introduce AV457, a novel rapalog developed to reduce side effects, and assess its dose-dependent safety and efficacy versus everolimus in PKD1 and PKD2 human kidney organoids, which form cysts in a PKD-specific way. Both AV457 and everolimus reduce cyst growth over time.

Combating trade in illegal wood and forest products with machine learning.

PLoS One

January 2025

Department of Computer Science, Virginia Tech, Arlington, VA, United States of America.

Trade in wood and forest products spans the global supply chain. Illegal logging and associated trade in forest products present a persistent threat to vulnerable ecosystems and communities. Illegal timber trade has been linked to violations of tax and conservation laws, as well as broader transnational crimes.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) are increasingly prevalent cardiovascular conditions, particularly among the elderly population. These two conditions share common risk factors and often coexist, leading to a complex interplay that alters the clinical course of each other. The pathophysiology of HFpEF is multifaceted and intricately linked, with atrial disease serving as a common pathophysiological pathway.

Human keratinocytes grown at a gas-permeable interface in vitro stratify correctly to generate engineered human epidermis.

Cytotherapy

December 2024

School of Biological Sciences, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand; Maurice Wilkins Centre, The University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. Electronic address:

Background: One of the key functions of human skin is to provide a barrier, protecting the body from the surrounding environment and maintaining homeostasis of the internal environment. A mature, stratified epidermis is critical to achieve skin barrier function and is particularly important when producing skin grafts in vitro for wound treatment. For decades epidermal stratification has been achieved in vitro by culturing keratinocytes at an air-liquid interface, triggering proliferating basal keratinocytes to differentiate and form all epidermal layers.
