Efforts to understand and respond to the opioid crisis have focused on overdose fatalities. Overdose mortality rates (ratios of overdoses resulting in death) are rarely examined though they are important indicators of harm reduction effectiveness. Factors that vary across urban communities likely determine which community members are receiving the resources needed to reduce fatal overdose risk.

Background: Breast cancer screening plays a pivotal role in early detection and subsequent effective management of the disease, impacting patient outcomes and survival rates.

Objective: This study aims to assess breast cancer screening rates nationwide in the United States and investigate the impact of social determinants of health on these screening rates.

Methods: Data on mammography screening at the census tract level for 2018 and 2020 were collected from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Using damage functions to map heritage climatology at a global scale.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

University College London, Central House, 14 Upper Woburn Place, London WC1H 0NN, UK. Electronic address:

This paper investigates heritage climatology through global analysis of damage functions for collections, aiming to learn about the reliability of these functions and the field itself. It addresses the growing interest in geospatial analysis of climate hazards for cultural heritage, proposing parameters that refine climate-related deterioration processes. Using global daily climate data from 1991 to 2020, the study assesses damage functions reliant on temperature and relative humidity inputs, including damage functions for paper and metals, alongside indices for humidity fluctuations and mould growth.

Background: Snakebite is a priority neglected tropical disease, but incidence data are lacking; current estimates rely upon incomplete health facility reports or ad hoc surveys. Spatial analysis methods harness statistical associations between case incidence and spatially varying factors to improve estimates. This systematic review aimed to identify variables associated with snakebite risk in spatial and temporal analyses for inclusion in geospatial studies to improve risk estimation accuracy.

Towards carbon neutrality: mapping mass retrofit opportunities in Cambridge, UK.

R Soc Open Sci

January 2025

Sustainable Design Group, Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 1PX, UK.

This study proposes a methodology and a proof of concept to target and prioritize mass retrofitting of residential buildings in the UK using open building datasets that combine fabric energy efficiency and fuel poverty to meet the net-zero targets. The methodological framework uses a series of multi-variate statistical and geospatial methods that consider urban, socio-economic and physical attributes. In addition, thermal imaging is implemented to provide insights at the building scale.
