Published: January 2024

Introduction: The frequency, intensity, and geographical reach of natural disasters, fueled in part by factors such as climate change, population growth, and urbanization, have undeniably been escalating concerns around the world.

Design And Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of natural disasters recorded in the Emergency Events Database from 1995 to 2022.

Results: Between 1995 and 2022, 11,360 natural disasters occurred, with a mean of 398 per year. Asia experienced the most disasters (4390) and the highest number of casualties (918,198). Hydrological disasters were the most common subgroup (4969), while geophysical disasters led in terms of deaths (770,644). Biological disasters caused the most injuries (2544), particularly in Africa.

Conclusion: Recognizing the historical impacts of the various subtypes of natural disasters may help different regions better risk analyze and mitigate the unique risks associated with such events.

Alkali and sulfate effects on mechanical properties and microscopic mechanisms of slag and fly ash geopolymers.

Sci Rep

January 2025

College of Hydraulic and Civil Engineering, Xinjiang Agricultural University, Urumqi, 830052, Xinjiang, People's Republic of China.

Aiming at the problem that it is difficult to realize low-cost, high-performance and large-scale utilization of cementitious materials prepared from bulk solid wastes, this paper constructs a set of composite cementitious system based on alkaline activation of slag and fly ash (FA) by calcium carbide slag (CCS) and synergistic activation of sodium sulfate (NaSO) as a chemical dopant. The influence of factors such as solid waste type, mixing ratio, and NaSO content on the mechanical properties of composite cementitious systems was investigated by assessing compressive strength and analyzing microstructure using XRD, SEM-EDS, and FTIR. The test results indicate that CCS and NaSO exert significant influences on the strength of the composite cementitious system.

Background: Nurse managers play a critical role in disaster response and management; yet research on their experiences in earthquakes remains limited.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of nurse managers in the Kahramanmaras, Turkey, earthquakes.

Methods: A phenomenological approach was used to guide this study, exploring the lived experiences of nurse managers who worked during the 2023 earthquakes in Kahramanmaras, Turkey.

The rising frequency and severity of landslides in the vulnerable Himalayan region of India threaten human settlements and critical infrastructure. This growing issue demands urgent action and innovative strategies to mitigate risks and bolster the resilience of affected communities and infrastructure in this fragile area. The research explores the use of Alnus nepalensis for slope stabilization, illustrated by a case study near Ukhimath, Uttarakhand, India, and elucidates the potential ecological niche of Alnus in the temperate region of Uttarakhand using well-dispersed species occurrence records along with environment.

Humanitarian medical response to natural and human-made disasters can be complicated by high clinician, staff, and patient turnover. While electronic medical records are being scaled up globally, their use remains limited in humanitarian response settings. The Fast Electronic Medical Record (fEMR) system is an open-source electronic health record system specifically designed for use in resource-limited settings and humanitarian crises.

Natural disasters such as earthquakes leave deep psychological effects on individuals that can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder, and understanding these effects is vital to support psychological recovery processes after trauma. In this context, the aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties, religious coping, positive reappraisal and seeking social support in the relationship between posttraumatic cognitive attributions and posttraumatic stress disorder in 2023 Kahramanmaraş Pazarcık, Elbistan and Hatay Yayladağı earthquake survivors (N = 408). The findings from the multiple mediation analysis showed the indirect effect of posttraumatic cognitive attribution on PTSD through difficulties in emotion regulation, religious coping, positive reappraisal, and seeking social support.
