Plastic waste from the fishing industry, particularly lobster trap identification tags from the USA and Canada, poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems due to its resilience. This study unveils a novel link between North American fisheries and the appearance of these plastic tags in Macaronesia. Collected in the Azores and Canary Islands, these tags offer a unique insight into the sources and spatio-temporal scales of marine plastic pollution. Ocean model data indicates the Labrador Current and Gulf Stream as key forces transporting these tags. Virtual particle simulations show a small fraction reaching Macaronesia (4.12 % in the Azores, 0.76 % in the Canary Islands), suggesting real ocean drift. The Azores, with more collected tags, are more susceptible, and tags can reach Macaronesia in under a year. These findings underscore the urgency of better waste management and emphasize the role of citizen science in monitoring and combating marine pollution.

This study investigated the effects of nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma (NAPP) application and dentin rehydration with water (REHY) on bond strength (BS) of adhesives. Three etch-and-rinse adhesives were tested: Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SBM / water-based primer + adhesive resin), Gluma Bond Universal (GBU / single-bottle containing acetone as organic solvent) and Prime&Bond Universal (PBU / single-bottle containing propanol as organic solvent). Adhesives were applied: 1- to phosphoric acid-etched dentin (Control), 2- after NAPP application for 45 seconds to etched dentin or 3- after REHY with water (10 seconds) of plasma-treated etched dentin.

Background: This study evaluated the effect of nano-silica (NS) incorporation with resin infiltrant on water sorption and solubility of resin infiltrant, mineral density of demineralized enamel, and resin tags penetration.
Methods: NS (Sigma-Aldrich, St Louis, Missouri, USA) was added into the resin infiltrant (ICON, DMG, Hamburg, Germany) at two concentrations by weight. The tested groups were: ICON (control), ICON + 0.

Tools for visualizing and manipulating protein dynamics in living cells are critical for understanding cellular function. Here we leverage recently available monoclonal antibody sequences to generate a set of affinity tags for labeling and manipulating AMPA-type glutamate receptors (AMPARs), which mediate nearly all excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. These antibodies can be produced from heterologous cells for exogenous labeling applications or directly expressed in living neurons as intrabodies, where they bind their epitopes in the endoplasmic reticulum and co-traffic to the cell surface for visualization with cell impermeant fluorescent dyes.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease, characterized by pathogenesis involving mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and ferroptosis. Unfortunately, there are currently no effective interventions to slow down the progression of PD. The mitochondrial protein coiled-coil-helix-coiled-coil-helix domain containing 2 (CHCHD2), which is implicated in neurodegeneration and serves as a biomarker for PD, has been reported to have neuroprotective effects against oxidative stress, but the potential molecular mechanisms involved remain elusive.

1. Monitoring behavioural dynamics in complex animal environments, such as poultry breeding facilities, poses a challenge. Utilising technological approaches, such as accelerometers, offers a solution to assess long-term changes in reproductive activity at an individual bird level.
