Uniform covalent organic framework nanoparticles (COF NPs) with a well-defined pore structure may provide a robust platform for scaffolding enzymes. Herein, bipyridine-based spherical COF NPs have been successfully prepared in this work through the Schiff base condensation reaction. Moreover, they are functionalized by metal modification and are further used for biosensor fabrication. Experimental results reveal that the metal-modified COF NPs also display impressive peroxidase-like catalytic activities, while they can load enzymes, such as glucose oxidase (GOx) and sarcosine oxidase (SOx), to develop a cascade catalysis system for design of various kinds of biosensors with very well performance. For example, the optimized GOx@Fe-COFs can achieve a sensitive detection of glucose with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 12.8 μM. Meanwhile, the enzymes also exhibit a commendable preservation of 80% enzymatic activity over a span of 14 days under ambient conditions. This work may pave the way for advancing cascade catalysis and the analysis of different kinds of biological molecules based on COF NPs.

The conventional molecular immunogenic cell death (ICD) inducers suffer from poor biocompatibility and unsatisfactory efficacy. Here, a biocompatible nanosized covalent organic framework (nCOF)-based pyroelectric catalyst (denoted as TPAD-COF NPs) is designed for pyroelectric catalysis-activated in situ immunotherapy. TPAD-COF NPs confine organic pyroelectric molecules to rigid TPAD-COF NPs to substantially reduce aggregation and enhance biocompatibility, thus improving pyroelectrocatalytic efficiency.

An innovative and potent nanozyme with reductase-like activity was developed by integrating the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) onto the surface of a covalent organic framework (COF). Based on the reductase-like activity of the COF-hybridized Au NPs, this nanozyme could efficiently catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NPH). Moreover, the prepared nanohybrid was utilized as an excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for highly sensitive SERS detection by combining the excellent adsorption properties of COFs and the large number of Raman hotspots between the high-density Au NPs.

Article Synopsis
  • Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging as innovative photocatalysts for visible-light-driven hydrogen production, yet comprehensive water-splitting systems using COFs remain limited.
  • This research combines two different COFs, TpBpy-COF and COF-316, to create a heterojunction system designed for efficient overall water splitting, with each COF contributing to hydrogen and oxygen evolution.
  • The introduction of ultra-small platinum nanoparticles into the system significantly enhances hydrogen and oxygen production rates, while studies indicate that the unique interface created between the COFs effectively improves the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers.

Here, we report ternary COFs@MoS-Pd hybrids with an innovative self-sacrificial approach. MoO@Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) microcables were first prepared and then two-dimensional MoS nanosheets (NSs) were integrated onto the surface of COFs, as COFs@MoS, after treatment with hydrothermal reaction. The MoS NSs were used as an excellent support to introduce Pd nanoparticles (NPs) thanks to their reducing ability for the formation of the ternary COFs@MoS-Pd hybrids.
