AI Article Synopsis

  • The initiative aims to democratize genomic data science by creating educational and research programs that connect genome science with local perspectives, particularly benefiting Indigenous students and educators.
  • A collaboration led to high school students researching bacteria from Mars analog sites, resulting in the discovery of 10 novel species and insights into bacterial communication relevant to astrobiology.
  • The program also provided hands-on experience in whole genome sequencing, increased student engagement in space research, and allowed participants to contribute culturally significant names to the newly identified species.

Article Abstract

Democratizing genomic data science, including bioinformatics, can diversify the STEM workforce and may, in turn, bring new perspectives into the space sciences. In this respect, the development of education and research programs that bridge genome science with "place" and world-views specific to a given region are valuable for Indigenous students and educators. Through a multi-institutional collaboration, we developed an ongoing education program and model that includes Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing, free bioinformatic platforms, and teacher training workshops to address our research and education goals through a place-based science education lens. High school students and researchers cultivated, sequenced, assembled, and annotated the genomes of 13 bacteria from Mars analog sites with cultural relevance, 10 of which were novel species. Students, teachers, and community members assisted with the discovery of new, potentially chemolithotrophic bacteria relevant to astrobiology. This joint education-research program also led to the discovery of species from Mars analog sites capable of producing -acyl homoserine lactones, which are quorum-sensing molecules used in bacterial communication. Whole genome sequencing was completed in high school classrooms, and connected students to funded space research, increased research output, and provided culturally relevant, place-based science education, with participants naming three novel species described here. Students at St. Andrew's School (Honolulu, Hawai'i) proposed the name for the type strain, BL16A, of the new species (DSM 112479 = NCTC 14602). The nonprofit organization Kauluakalana proposed the name for the type strain, K61, of the new species (DSM 116657 = LMG = 33184), and Hawai'i Baptist Academy students proposed the name for the type strain, BL16E, of the new species (DSM 112478 = NCTC 14603).

This study investigates food odour perception and affective response within a virtually simulated spacecraft environment, with links to the volatile composition of odours. Healthy participants (n = 44) between the ages of 18-39 years rated the intensity of eight food odours in two simulated space environments for comparison, a 'microgravity' posture (MicroG Posture; physical) and Virtual Reality (VR; visual-spatial cues) simulation of a spacecraft. Results indicate that these methods yield different outcomes.

Purpose: This study evaluates patient-reported outcomes among patients who underwent medial collateral ligament (MCL) reconstruction with suture-augmented semitendinosus autograft (SASA).

Methods: Patients who underwent SASA MCL reconstruction between 2017 and 2022 participated in preoperative and postoperative surveys for patient-reported outcomes: Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAS), Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcomes Score (KOOS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE), Marx Activity Rating Scale (MARS), and Veterans Rand 12 (VR-12). Paired t-tests were performed to compare preoperative and postoperative scores.

Introduction: This study evaluated patient-reported outcome measures and reinjury rates in higher-risk adolescents and young adults aged 14-25 years old following Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction using autograft with suture tape augmentation (SA ACLR).

Materials And Methods: We performed a retrospective case series of patients aged 14-25 who underwent SA ACLR by a single surgeon between 2016 and 2020. After a minimum of 2 years of follow-up, data was collected on reinjury and patient reported outcome measures, including Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), Marx Activity Rating Scale (MARS), Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE), and Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAPS).

In situ resource utilization systems based on cyanobacteria could support the sustainability of crewed missions to Mars. However, their resource-efficiency will depend on the extent to which gases from the Martian atmosphere must be processed to support cyanobacterial growth. The main purpose of the present work is to help assess this extent.

This study aimed to predict temporomandibular disorder (TMD) using machine learning (ML) approaches based on measurement parameters that are practically acquired in clinical settings. 125 patients with TMD and 103 individuals without TMD were included in the study. Pain intensity (with visual analog scale), maximum mouth opening (MMO) and lateral excursion movements (with millimeter ruler), cervical range of motion (with goniometer), pressure pain threshold (PPT; with algometer), oral parafunctional behaviors (with Oral Behaviors Checklist), psychological status (with Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and quality of life (with Oral Health Impact Profile) were evaluated.
