Arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs) are a family of hyperglycosylated hydroxyproline-rich cell wall proteins found throughout the plant kingdom. To date, eight Hydroxyproline-galactosyltransferases (Hyp-GALTs), named GALT2-GALT9, are known to catalyze the addition of the first galactose sugar to Hyp residues in AGP protein cores. The generation and characterization of octuple mutants using CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology, provided strong reverse genetic evidence that AG glycans are essential for normal vegetative and reproductive growth, as these mutants demonstrated stunted growth, greatly delayed flowering and significant defects in floral organ development and morphogenesis. Compared to the lower seed set of quintuple mutants being more so contributed by female gametophytic defects, dramatically low seed-set of octuple mutants was largely due to impaired male reproductive function, specifically due to shorter filaments, delayed anther dehiscence, and large decreases in pollen quantity and viability. Octuple mutant pollen had severely distorted reticulate exine, tectum patterning and intine thickness. Reduced amounts of galactose and arabinose in overall lower amounts of β-Yariv precipitated AGPs illustrated how biological functions of AGPs are affected by abnormal glycosylation.

Global warming and declining rainfall in recent years have led to increased water and soil salinity in Iran agricultural lands. To address these challenges, greenhouse cultivation, particularly soilless culture, emerges as a critical solution for mitigating the effect of soil salinity and water scarcity on vegetable plant production in Iran. The aim of this experiment was to compare the growth and physiological responses of cucumber plants cultivated in both soil and soilless systems, using three distinct nutrient solutions.

In this study, we present a comprehensive peptidomic atlas of 13 maize tissues, covering both vegetative and reproductive phases. Using a three-frame translation of canonical coding sequences, we identified 6100 nonredundant endogenous peptides, significantly expanding the known plant peptide repertoire. By integrating peptidomic coexpression profiles with previously reported proteomic profiles, we found that the peptide abundance did not consistently correlate with the abundance of their source proteins, suggesting the presence of complex regulatory mechanisms.

Balanced plant nutrition and optimal micro-climate are critical for achieving higher production sustainably. Substituting mineral fertilizers with organic amendments under water-conserving strategies like mulch can enhance the quality and yield and improve soil health. Therefore, a two-year study was conducted to examine the synergistic effects of mulch and reducing inorganic fertilizers and partially substituting organic amendments on essential oil (EO) yield and its composition, and soil properties in Salvia sclarea, an industrially important crop.

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated GhFT-targeted mutagenesis prolongs indeterminate growth and alters plant architecture in cotton.

The shift from vegetative to reproductive growth is an important developmental transition that affects flowering and maturation, architecture, and ecological adaptability in plants. The florigen-antiflorigen system universally controls flowering and plant architecture, and changes to the ratio of these components alter this transition and disrupt growth. The genes FT (FLOWERING LOCUS T), encoding the florigen protein FT, and CETS [CENTRORADIALIS (CEN)/TERMINAL FLOWER1 (TFL1)/SELF-PRUNING (SP)], encoding antiflorigen proteins, have opposing roles.

Tolerance to insect herbivory increases with progressing plant development.

Plant Biol (Stuttg)

Laboratory of Entomology, Plant Sciences, Wageningen University and Research, Wageningen, The Netherlands.

Plants can sustain various degrees of damage or compensate for tissue loss by regrowth without significant fitness costs. This tolerance to insect herbivory depends on the plant's developmental stage during which the damage is inflicted and on how much tissue is removed. Plant fitness correlates, that is, biomass and germination of seeds, were determined at different ontogenetic stages, vegetative, budding, or flowering stages of three annual brassicaceous species exposed to feeding by Pieris brassicae caterpillars at different intensities.
