In the present study, single phase nickel based disulphide (NiS) and diselenide (NiSe) nanostructures were prepared hydrothermally in a short time span (4 h) under subcritical temperature (160 °C). The nanostructures grow in cubic crystal phases. Average crystallite sizes and intrinsic microstrains were determined using Williamson-Hall (W-H) plot analysis. Hollow NiS nanospheres and bipyramidal NiSe nanostructures are reported that are suitable for surface related applications. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated high stability of the nanostructures at elevated temperatures. Optical studies indicated visible light activeness of the nanostructures exhibiting sharp band edges. The nanostructures are mesoporous in nature with NiS and NiSe having respectively a large specific surface area of 310 m/g and 177 m/g. A primarily work done to determine the electrochemical nature of the nanostructures showed the materials are pseudo-capacitive in nature with specific capacitances of 1022 F/g and 480 F/g respectively for NiS and NiSe. The photo-catalytic activity of the nanostructures was explored against a colourless pollutant; phenol. The nanostructures degraded most of the phenol (>90 %) under visible light illumination and the reusability experiments performed determined industrial value of the photocatalysts.

The development and comprehensive understanding of nickel chalcogenides are critical since they constitute a class of efficient electro(pre)catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and value-added organic oxidations. This study introduces a knowledge-based facile approach to analogous NiE (E = S, Se, Te) phases, originating from molecular β-diketiminato [NiE] complexes and their application for OER and organic oxidations. The recorded activity trends for both target reactions follow the order NiSe > NiS > NiTe.

The shuttle effect significantly hinders the industrialization of high-energy-density lithium-sulfur batteries. To address this issue, NiS/NiSe homologous heterostructure polyhedron (HHP) composite separators were developed to immobilize polysulfides and promote their swift conversion. An in-situ visualization symmetrical cell was specifically designed to show the rapid polysulfide adsorption capability of NiS/NiSe HHP, while the electrolyte-separator interfacial contact behavior was simulated to elucidate the mechanism of action of the composite separator in affecting the homogeneous nucleation of lithium metal surfaces.

The chemical properties of polymorphic compounds are highly dependent on their stoichiometry and atomic arrangements, making certain phases technologically more important. Selective development of these phases is challenging. This study introduces a method where chalcogenide atoms from metal chalcogenides are chemically extracted by trioctylphosphine (TOP) and substituted with phosphide.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are garnering considerable scientific interest, prompting discussion regarding their prospective applications in the fields of nanoelectronics and spintronics while also fueling groundbreaking discoveries in phenomena such as the fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect (FQAHE) and exciton dynamics. The abundance of binary compound TMDs, such as MX (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se, Te), has unlocked myriad avenues of exploration. However, the exploration of ternary compound TMDs remains relatively limited, with notable examples being TaNiS and TaNiSe.

The catalytic activation of the Li-S reaction is fundamental to maximize the capacity and stability of Li-S batteries (LSBs). Current research on Li-S catalysts mainly focuses on optimizing the energy levels to promote adsorption and catalytic conversion, while frequently overlooking the electronic spin state influence on charge transfer and orbital interactions. Here, hollow NiS/NiSe heterostructures encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix (NiS/NiSe@NC) are synthesized and used as a catalytic additive in sulfur cathodes.
