Water oxidation is a bottleneck reaction for the establishment of solar-to-fuel energy conversion systems. Earth-abundant metal-based polyoxometalates are promising heterogeneous water oxidation catalysts that can operate in a wide pH range. However, detailed structure-reactivity relationships are not yet comprehensively understood, hampering the design and synthesis of more effective polyoxometalate-based oxidation catalysts. Here we report the synthesis of an ordered, mixed-metal cobalt-iron Weakley archetype [Co(HO)Fe(CoWO)] (CoFe-WS), which unexpectedly highlights the strong influence of the central, coordinatively saturated metal ions on the catalytic water oxidation characteristics. The resulting species exhibits catalytic turnover frequencies which are up to 4× higher than those of the corresponding archetype tetracobalt-oxo species [Co(HO)Co(PWO)] (Co-WS). It is further striking that the system becomes catalytically inactive when one of the central positions is occupied by a W ion as demonstrated by [Co(HO)CoW(CoWO)] (CoW-WS). Importantly, this study demonstrates that coordinatively saturated metal ions in this central position, which at first glance appear insignificant, do not solely have a structural role but also impart a distinctive structural influence on the reactivity of the polyoxometalate. These results provide unique insights into the structure-reactivity relationships of polyoxometalates with improved catalytic performance characteristics.

Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) is a key channel for water transport in peritoneal dialysis. Inhibition of AQP1 could therefore impair water transport during peritoneal dialysis. It is not known whether inhibition of AQP1 occurs unintentionally due to off-target interactions of administered medications.

In this study, we utilized drinking water treatment sludge (WTS) to produce adsorbents through the drying and calcination process. These adsorbents were then evaluated for their ability to remove azithromycin (AZT) from aqueous solutions. The L-500 adsorbent, derived from the calcination (at 500°C) of WTS generated under conditions of low turbidity in the drinking water treatment plant, presented an increase in the specific surface area from 70.

The direct incorporation of borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) subunits into the structural backbone of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) gives facile access to porous photosensitizers but is still a challenging task. Here, we introduce β‑ketoenamine-linked BDP‑TFP‑COF, which crystallizes in AA‑stacking mode with hcb topology. A comprehensive characterization reveals high crystallinity and enhanced stability in a variety of solvents, excellent mesoporosity (SABET = 1042 m2 g-1), broad light absorption in the visible region, and red emission upon the exfoliation of few-layer COF nanosheets.
