Unlabelled: Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) has been widely exploited for hybrid seed production in onions ( L.). In contrast to long-day onion cultivars, short-day onion has not yet been investigated for mitochondrial genome structure and DNA rearrangements associated with CMS activity. Here, we report the 3,16,321 bp complete circular mitochondrial genome of tropical onion CMS line (97A). Due to the substantial number of repetitive regions, the assembled mitochondrial genome of maintainer line (97B) remained linear with 15 scaffolds. Additionally, 13 and 20 chloroplast-derived fragments with a size ranging from 143 to 13,984 bp and 153-17,725 bp were identified in the 97A and 97B genomes, respectively. Genome annotation revealed 24 core protein-coding genes along with 24 and 28 tRNA genes in the mitochondrial genomes of 97A and 97B, respectively. Furthermore, comparative genome analysis of the 97A and 97B mitochondrial genomes showed that gene content was almost similar except for the chimeric ORF725 gene which is the extended form of the COX1 gene.

Adaptive evolution of stress response genes in parasites aligns with host niche diversity.

BMC Biol

Faculty of Sciences, Centre for Environmental Sciences, Research Group Zoology: Biodiversity and Toxicology, UHasselt - Hasselt University, Diepenbeek, Belgium.

Background: Stress responses are key the survival of parasites and, consequently, also the evolutionary success of these organisms. Despite this importance, our understanding of the evolution of molecular pathways dealing with environmental stressors in parasitic animals remains limited. Here, we tested the link between adaptive evolution of parasite stress response genes and their ecological diversity and species richness.

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of New Drug Design and Evaluation, State Key Laboratory of Anti-Infective Drug Discovery and Development, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, 510006, China.

Background: Recent studies indicate that N6-methyladenosine (mA) RNA modification may regulate ferroptosis in cancer cells, while its molecular mechanisms require further investigation.

Methods: Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS) was used to detect changes in mA levels in cells. Transmission electron microscopy and flow cytometry were used to detect mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Development of a mitochondrial mini-barcode and its application in metabarcoding for identification of leech in traditional Chinese medicine.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the medicinal leech is vital for treatments to promote blood circulation and eliminate blood stasis. However, the prevalence of counterfeit leech products in the market undermines the quality and efficacy of these remedies. Traditional DNA barcoding techniques, such as the COI barcode, have been limited in their application due to amplification challenges.

Mitochondria are semi-autonomous organelle present in eukaryotic cells, containing their own genome and transcriptional machinery. However, their functions are intricately linked to proteins encoded by the nuclear genome. Mitochondrial transcription termination factors (mTERFs) are nucleic acid-binding proteins involved in RNA splicing and transcription termination within plant mitochondria and chloroplasts.

3-methyl-4-nitrophenol disturbs the maternal-to-zygotic transition of early embryos by damaging mitochondrial function and histone modification.

3-methyl-4-nitrophenol (PNMC), a chemical prevalent in various industries for drug, dye, and leather production, also serves as a primary byproduct of organophosphate insecticides. Despite its global recognition as an endocrine disruptor with documented reproductive toxicity, its detrimental impact on preimplantation embryonic development has yet to be thoroughly investigated. In this study, through the in vitro culture of mice embryos, it was initially observed that even low concentrations of PNMC exposure led to a significant reduction in blastocyst formation and a sharp decline in the ratio of inner cell mass within the blastocysts.
