Sulfonic acid-containing bioorganic monomers with wide molecular designability and abundant hydrogen bonding sites hold great potential to design diverse functional biocrystals but have so far not been explored for piezoelectric energy harvesting applications due to the lack of strategies to break the centrosymmetry of their assemblies. Here, a significant molecular packing transformation from centrosymmetric into non-centrosymmetric conformation by the addition of an amide terminus in the sulfonic acid-containing bioorganic molecule is demonstrated, allowing a high electromechanical response. The amide-functionalized molecule self-assembles into a polar supramolecular parallel β-sheet-like structure with a high longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient d = 15.9 pm V that produces the maximal open-circuit voltage of >1 V and the maximal power of 18 nW in nanogenerator devices pioneered. By contrast, molecules containing an amino or a cyclohexyl terminus assemble into highly symmetric 3D hydrogen bonding diamondoid-like networks or 2D double layer structures that show tunable morphologies, thermostability, and mechanical properties but non-piezoelectricity. This work not only presents a facile approach to achieving symmetry transformation of bioorganic assemblies but also demonstrates the terminal group and the property correlation for tailor-made design of high-performance piezoelectric biomaterials.

Flow injection mass spectrometry (FI-MS) is widely employed for high-throughput metabolome analysis, yet the absence of prior separation leads to significant matrix effects, thereby limiting the metabolome coverage. In this study, we introduce a novel photosensitive MS probe, iTASO-ONH, integrated with FI-MS to establish a high-throughput strategy for submetabolome analyses. The iTASO probe features a conjugated-imino sulfonate moiety for efficient photolysis under 365 nm irradiation and a reactive group for selective metabolite labeling.

Single-solute batch kinetic and isotherm experiments were conducted in Type 1 (18.2 MΩ·cm resistivity) water supplemented with 10 mM carbonate buffer (pH 7.75, 25 °C) for nine drinking water relevant perfluoroalkyl chemicals and three bituminous-coal based granular activated carbons (GACs).

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in surface waters has raised widespread concerns due to its potential environmental and biological hazards. In this study, the performance, mechanism, and environmental application of phenolic acid-containing compounds (PACCs) enhanced Fe/peroxides processes for SMX degradation were investigated. PACCs with two Ar-OH groups exhibited the lowest toxicity and the best enhancement performance (65%-66% of PDS, 47%-58% of PMS and 61%-63% of HO), which were attributed to the excellent chelating and reducing ability towards Fe.

A nanocomposite of tannic acid and cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW)-reinforced polysulfone (PSF) was used to develop a metallochromic nanofibrous membrane sensor for iron(III) in aqueous media. Tannic acid was used as an active detecting probe, whereas the CNW@PSF composite was employed as a hosting material. Cellulose nanowhiskers (7-12 nm) were obtained from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC).

We have described a new route for the preparation of partially methylated polygalacturonic acid containing hydrolyzed (acidic) and unhydrolyzed (methyl esterified) carboxylate groups in a ratio of 1:1 (PGA, compound ), and one of its basic Fe-salts (compound ) with a ~1:2 Fe:GA stoichiometry (GA means galacturonic acid and methylated galacturonic acid units). The partially hydrolyzed pectin was transformed into compound with the use of double ion exchange with a strongly acidic macroreticular sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer as a hydrogen ion source. The reaction of compound with FeCl resulted in compound .
