Rethinking gender differences: An investigation of comorbid psychopathology and alcohol use disorder in veterans.

Alcohol Clin Exp Res (Hoboken)

January 2025

Sierra Pacific Mental Illness, Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC), Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Healthcare System, Palo Alto, California, USA.

Background: While men have been found to drink more alcohol and have higher rates of alcohol-related mortality, women tend to experience higher rates of alcohol-related consequences, including psychological comorbidities and worse alcohol use disorder (AUD) outcomes. However, gender differences in comorbid psychopathology and associations with AUD outcomes among veterans are less well understood.

Methods: Veterans (N = 126; 32 women) receiving inpatient treatment for AUD completed baseline clinical measures including the Beck Depression Inventory-II, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Early Life Stress Questionnaire, and PTSD Checklist for DSM-5.

Kidney replacement therapy (KRT) is one of the most energy-consuming and waste-producing medical treatments. Reducing the need of dialysis is therefore an environmentally friendly choice. However, preferring prevention, lifestyle-related interventions and patient education to drugs is time consuming and most physicians are already overburdened by the many demands of routine clinical practice.

Next-generation sequencing has revealed the disruptive reality that advanced/metastatic cancers have complex and individually distinct genomic landscapes, necessitating a rethinking of treatment strategies and clinical trial designs. Indeed, the molecular reclassification of cancer suggests that it is the molecular underpinnings of the disease, rather than the tissue of origin, that mostly drives outcomes. Consequently, oncology clinical trials have evolved from standard phase 1, 2, and 3 tissue-specific studies; to tissue-specific, biomarker-driven trials; to tissue-agnostic trials untethered from histology (all drug-centered designs); and, ultimately, to patient-centered, N-of-1 precision medicine studies in which each patient receives a personalized, biomarker-matched therapy/combination of drugs.

The species, valued for their pharmaceutical, ornamental, and economic importance, exhibit notable rarity and endemism in the Karst areas of the Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau in China. These species face significant threats from habitat loss and fragmentation, leading to a decline in biodiversity. To mitigate these threats, the Maxent algorithm was employed to analyze current and future distribution patterns, with a particular focus on the influence of climate variables in predicting potential distribution shifts and assessing extinction risks under the optimistic SSP1-2.

Rethinking Repeat Two-Stage Knee Exchange Arthroplasty: Outcomes, Risks, and Decision-Making.

J Arthroplasty

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH), No. 5 Fu-Hsing Street, Kweishan, Taoyuan, Taiwan; Bone and Joint Research Center, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH), No. 5 Fu-Hsing Street, Kweishan, Taoyuan, Taiwan; College of Medicine, Chang Gung University (CGU), 259 Wen-Hwa 1st Road, Kweishan, Taoyuan, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background: Chronic periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) presents a major challenge in knee arthroplasty, with varying success rates reported for two-stage exchange arthroplasty (EA) and a lack of consensus on managing failures from such procedures. This study evaluated repeat two-stage EA outcomes for knee PJI after initial treatment failure to identify the risk factors for reimplantation unsuitability and reinfection.

Methods: We analyzed 114 patients who underwent repeat EA for chronic knee PJI between 2010 and 2018.
