Smart microstructure and interface design in nanomultilayers allows to tailor physical properties like thermal stability, thermal conductivity and directional metal outflow for targeted applications. In this work, selected examples of nanomultilayer systems, constituted of alternating nanolayers of metals and/or nitrides, as precisely fabricated with variable textures, microstructures, grain sizes and internal stresses are presented. The role of the microstructure and stress state on selected functional properties is shown.

Copper matrix composites (Cu-MCs) have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional electrical, wear-resistant, and mechanical properties. Among them, AlO/Cu composites, reinforced with AlO, are a focal point in the field of high-strength, high-conductivity copper alloys, owing to their high strength, excellent electrical conductivity, and superior resistance to high-temperature softening. Cold deformation is an effective method for enhancing the mechanical properties of AlO/Cu composites.

The utilization of waste fly ash and natural jute fiber has drawn attention to producing sustainable concrete. However, there is a lack of studies to analyze the synergistic effect of jute fiber and fly ash on the properties of concrete. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the combined effect of fly ash concentration and the different sizes of jute fiber on the fresh, hardened, and non-destructive testing properties of concrete.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Tunability of Double-Network Hydrogel Strength and Lubricity.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

April 2023

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois 61801, United States.

Double-network (DN) hydrogels are promising materials for tissue engineering due to their biocompatibility, high strength, and toughness, but understanding of their microstructure-property relationships still remains limited. This work investigates a DN hydrogel comprising a physically crosslinked agarose, as the first network, and a chemically crosslinked copolymer with a varying ratio of acrylamide and acrylic acid, as the second network. The charge, intrinsic to most DN hydrogels, introduces a responsive behavior to chemical and electrical stimuli.

Exploration of the Compressive Strength and Microscopic Properties of Portland Cement Taking Attapulgite and Montmorillonite Clay as an Additive.

Materials (Basel)

February 2023

Key Laboratory of Advanced Civil Engineering Materials of Ministry of Education, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai 201804, China.

The effects of attapulgite and montmorillonite calcinated at 750 °C for 2 h as supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) on the working properties, mechanical strength, phase composition, morphology, hydration and heat release of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) were studied. The results show that pozzolanic activity increased with time after calcination, and with the increase in content of calcined attapulgite and calcined montmorillonite, the fluidity of cement paste exhibited a downward trend. Meanwhile, the calcined attapulgite had a greater effect on the decrease in the fluidity of cement paste than calcined montmorillonite, and the maximum reduction was 63.

Diversity and Tailorability of Photoelectrochemical Properties of Carbon Dots.

Acc Chem Res

November 2022

Institute of Functional Nano and Soft Materials (FUNSOM), Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Carbon-based Functional Materials and Devices, Soochow University, 199 Ren'ai Road, Suzhou 215123, China.

As a new kind of carbon based functional material, carbon dots (CDs) have sparked much interest in recent years. The tunable structure, composition, and morphology of CDs unlocks opportunities to enable diversity in their photoelectrochemical properties, and thus they show great potential in various applications such as biology, catalysis, sensors, and energy storage. Nevertheless, the related understanding of CDs is insufficient at present due to their inherent complexity of microstructure, which involves the intersection of high polymer, bulk carbon, and quantum dot (QD).
