In sporadic idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (sIPF) and pulmonary fibrosis caused by a mutation in telomere (TRG-PF) or surfactant related genes (SRG-PF), there are a number of aberrant cellular processes known that can lead to fibrogenesis. We investigated whether RNA expression of genes involved in these processes differed between sIPF, TRG-PF, and SRG-PF and whether expression levels were associated with survival. RNA expression of 28 genes was measured in lung biopsies of 26 sIPF, 17 TRG-PF, and 6 SRG-PF patients. Significant differences in RNA expression of ( = 0.02) and ( = 0.02) were found between sIPF, TRG-PF, and SRG-PF. Patients with low (

Occupational exposure to crystalline silica is etiologically linked to an increased incidence of systemic sclerosis (SSc), also called Erasmus syndrome. The underlying mechanisms of silica-related SSc are still poorly understood. We demonstrated that early and repeated silica exposure contribute to the severity of SSc symptoms in the hypochloric acid (HOCl)-induced SSc mouse model.

Mycobacterium abscessus (Mabs), an intracellular and opportunistic pathogen, is considered the most pathogenic fast-growing mycobacterium, and causes severe pulmonary infections in patients with cystic fibrosis. While bacterial factors contributing to its pathogenicity are well studied, the host factors and responses that worsen Mabs infection are not fully understood. Here, we report that Mabs systemic infection alters Drosophila melanogaster intestinal homeostasis.
