Published: December 2023

Objective: To assess the sociodemographic aspects associated with reproductive autonomy among urban women, with special regard to the relationship with the use of contraceptive methods.

Method: Cross-sectional study with 1252 women, conducted between April and June 2021, using the Brazilian version of the Reproductive Autonomy Scale. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression.

Results: Mean scores for the subscales were 2.5 (SD=0.3) (Decision-making), 3.8 (SD=0.3) (Absence of Coercion) and 3.6 (SD=0.4) (Communication). Compared to women who reported no use of contraceptive methods, women using barrier or behavioral methods and those using LARC had higher level of reproductive autonomy on all dimensions of the Scale (p<0.001). Other aspects associated with reproductive autonomy were education, race/ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status and cohabitation living with a partner, depending on each subscale.

Conclusion: The type of contraceptive method used was statistically associated with reproductive autonomy in all subscales.

Purpose: While several studies demonstrate an association between reproductive coercion or a lack of reproductive autonomy and decreased mental health in women, little is known about potential mental health impacts when women are denied prescription contraceptives. The aim of this research was to explore associations between prescription contraceptive denial and perceived ease of future access to contraception, and self-assessed mental health.

Patients And Methods: Polish women (N=424) completed an anonymous online survey with demographic questions; perceived stress (PSS-10), state anxiety (STAI-X1), and depression (CESD-R) assessments, and contraceptive access questions.

Playing dirty: the shady governance and reproduction of migrant illegality.

J Ethn Migr Stud

Institute of Sociology and Cultural Organisation (ISCO), Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Lüneburg, Germany.

State authorities in Europe invest immense resources in what the EU insists on calling the 'fight against illegal migration'. Based on ethnographic research in two German cities, this paper shows that a tough approach towards illegalised migration can only be implemented through state practices that operate at the margins of, or even cross, the boundaries of what is legally permissible. This argument is developed through an analysis of informal practices that frontline staff in registry offices and migration administrations deploy to prevent, or at least disturb, illegalised migrants' attempts to regularise their status by becoming the parent of child that is entitled to German citizenship.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Context: According to Swedish law, abortion treatment should be carried out at an approved healthcare facility. All persons seeking medication abortions are obliged to attend an in-person visit, which includes a gynecological examination, an ultrasound scan, and administration of mifepristone at a hospital/clinic. However, some countries have implemented telemedicine abortion services without the requirement of in-person visits during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: We explored awareness of and attitudes about the safety of various methods people use to attempt to end a pregnancy without medical assistance, which we refer to in this study collectively as self-managed abortion (SMA).

Methods: In 2020, we invited individuals living in eight United States (US) states considered "hostile" to abortion rights or with a history of criminalizing abortions performed outside the formal healthcare system to participate in semi-structured telephone interviews regarding their attitudes toward these practices. We analyzed coded transcripts for content and themes.
