Diagnosing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using only single-modality images is controversial. We aimed to use multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combining structural, diffusion, and functional MRI to possibly provide a more comprehensive viewpoint on the decisive characteristics of PTSD patients. Typhoon-exposed individuals with (n = 26) and without PTSD (n = 32) and healthy volunteers (n = 30) were enrolled. Five MRI features from three modalities, including two resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) features (amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation, ALFF; and regional homogeneity, ReHo), one structural MRI feature (gray matter density, GM), and two diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) features (fractional anisotropy, FA; and mean diffusivity, MD) were investigated simultaneously with a multimodal canonical correlation analysis + joint independent component analysis model to identify abnormalities in the PTSD brain. We identified statistical differences between PTSD patients and healthy controls in terms of 1 rs-fMRI (ALFF, ReHo) alterations in the superior frontal gyrus, precuneus, inferior parietal lobule (IPL), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), 2 DTI (FA, MD) changes in the pons, genu, and splenium of the corpus callosum, and 3 Structural MRI abnormalities in the precuneus, IPL, ACC, and PCC. A novel ReHo component was found to distinguish PTSD and trauma-exposed controls, including the precuneus, IPL, middle frontal gyrus, middle occipital gyrus, and cerebellum. This study reveals that PTSD individuals exhibit intertwined functional and structural anomalies within the default mode network. Some alterations within this network may serve as a potential marker to distinguish between PTSD patients and trauma-exposed controls.

Background: Mood and anxiety disorders affect one in five perinatal individuals and are undertreated. While professional organizations and policy makers recommend that obstetric practices screen for, assess and treat mood and anxiety disorders, multi-level barriers to doing so exist. To help obstetric practices implement the recommended standard of care, we developed implementation assistance, an approach to guide practices on how to integrate screening, assessment, and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders into the obstetric practice workflow.

Understanding how the brain distinguishes emotional from neutral scenes is crucial for advancing brain-computer interfaces, enabling real-time emotion detection for faster, more effective responses, and improving treatments for emotional disorders like depression and anxiety. However, inconsistent research findings have arisen from differences in study settings, such as variations in the time windows, brain regions, and emotion categories examined across studies. This review sought to compile the existing literature on the timing at which the adult brain differentiates basic affective from neutral scenes in less than one second, as previous studies have consistently shown that the brain can begin recognizing emotions within just a few milliseconds.

Background: 2022 survey data showed 29% of Veterans utilized Veterans Affairs (VA) paid health care at a non-VA facility, 6% higher than in 2021. Despite an increase in the number of Veterans accessing care in the community via the MISSION Act Community Care Program (CCP), there is limited information on the quality of mental health care delivered to Veterans in these settings. Further, Veterans report barriers to quality care, including poor communication between CCP and VA providers, which can result in negative patient outcomes.
