The propagation of surface plasma waves (SPWs) in 90 nm-thick Au films perforated with n × n square lattices of circular holes, referred to as n-metal photonic crystals (n-MPCs), is investigated. The hole period was set to 3 µm with n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, 24, 36, and 72. For each n-MPC, the total number of holes was conserved to 5184 (= 72 × 72), which were grouped to form an Mn × Mn (Mn = 72/n) array of lattices, evenly spaced on 384 × 384 µm. The n-MPCs were individually integrated on semi-insulating GaAs substrates. In the transmission through them, the primary peak by the SPW excited at the n-MPC/GaAs interface exhibits clear variation with n in its wavelength and intensity. It begins to appear for n ∼ 4 and its intensity is increased with n but saturated for n∼ > 36 with Fano lineshape. These imply the SPW excitation is significantly affected by the boundary and number of holes in each lattice. Such lattice size-dependent transmission is compared with the absorption of the quantum dot infrared photodetectors identically coupled to the n-MPCs. In the absorption, the saturation of the peak intensity is observed for n∼ > 24, lower than the ∼36 in the transmission. Their difference is characterized with the SPW propagation and decay that critically depend on the dielectric properties of devices as well as the number of holes and boundaries of each lattice in plasmonic excitation.

Majorana zero modes are predicted to emerge in semiconductor/superconductor interfaces, such as InAs/Al. Majorana modes could be utilized for fault tolerant topological qubits. However, their realization is hindered by materials challenges.

The purpose of the experiment was to indicate which element of the production process of flexible printed circuit boards is optimal in terms of the reliability of final products. According to the Taguchi method, in the experiment, five factors with two levels each were chosen for the subsequent analysis. These included the number of conductive layers, the thickness of the laminate layer, the type of the laminate, the diameter of the plated holes, and the current density in the galvanic bath.

To achieve the assembled connection between dovetail profiled steel sheets and the boundary members in dovetail profiled steel concrete composite shear walls (DPSCWs), self-tapping screws were employed. Three DPSCW specimens connected with self-tapping screws were tested under combined axial and cyclic lateral loads to evaluate their hysteretic response, focusing on the influence of the number of self-tapping screws and the axial compression ratio. The self-tapping screw-connected DPSCWs exhibited a mixed failure mode, characterized by shear failure of the profiled steel sheets and compression-bending failure of multiple wall limbs divided by ribs on the web concrete.

The effect of pores distribution on the multi-scale structure, enzyme accessibility, and pasting properties of the waxy maize starch granules with the same degree of hydrolysis were examined. Increased maltogenic α-amylase (MA) dosage obviously increased the shallow pores number and the roughness, whereas extended time increased the holes depth. Despite achieving the same hydrolysis degree and specific surface area, samples with numerous shallow holes exhibited a higher mass fractal dimension, a lower, peak viscosity, final viscosity and setback.

The concept of non-Hermiticity has expanded the understanding of band topology, leading to the emergence of counter-intuitive phenomena. An example is the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), which involves the concentration of eigenstates at the boundary. However, despite the potential insights that can be gained from high-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum systems in areas such as curved space, high-order topological phases and black holes, the realization of this effect in high dimensions remains unexplored.
