Curvularia lunata is a saprobic dematiaceous mould that resides primarily in soil (Ellis, 1966). Reports of human disease caused by this organism are rare but include: endocarditis, brain abscess, skin infections, onychomycosis, keratitis, pneumonia, disseminated disease, mycetoma, allergic bronchopulmonary disease, and one case of sinusitis. Since 1983, we have encountered five cases of paranasal sinusitis due to C. lunata. None of the patients suffered from known immunologic disorders or underlying debilitating diseases. These five cases are presented and the literature of human phaeohyphomycosis caused by Curvularia spp. is reviewed.

Introduction: Phaeohyphomycoses are uncommon and poorly understood opportunistic fungal infections, characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from localized skin lesions to disseminated disease. Most frequent genera are Alternaria, Cladophialophora, Exophiala or Curvularia. Less common ones, such as Verruconis gallopava, initially described as responsible of encephalitis of turkeys, pose significant challenges for diagnosis and treatment.

Seven new polyketides [moringols I-VII (1-7)], a new alkaloid [moringamine I (8)], and seven known compounds (9-15) were isolated from the fungus Curvularia moringae JKYM-KR4. The planar chemical structures and relative configurations of the new compounds were elucidated by high-resolution mass spectrometry, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, and DP4+ analysis using the calculated C NMR chemical shifts. For moringols I and II (1 and 2), the planar chemical structures and relative configurations were confirmed using X-ray crystallography.

Exploration of medicinal plants for bioactive-producing endophytic fungi is a relatively unmapped source of pharmaceutically important compounds. In this study, the endophytic fungus Curvularia lunata AREF029 isolated from the medicinal plant Cymbopogon citratus (known as lemongrass) was assessed for its biological activity. The methanolic extract of AREF029 had minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) ranging from 38 to 174 µg/ml against phytopathogenic fungi Alteranria solani, Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia solani.
