Ammonia borane (NHBH) is a carrier of hydrogen gas that is known as a carbon-free renewable energy source. A high hydrogen content of ammonia borane and its stability in air at ambient temperatures make it a valuable molecule for its potential use as a hydrogen storage compound. In this study, we investigate a new approach for synthesizing ammonia borane using wastewater-derived ammonia source. Wastewater recycling has always been a global interest towards sustainability. In addition to reclaiming the water, recycling nutrients in wastewater is a topic of interest. Nutrients such as nitrogen, magnesium, and phosphorous are readily recovered from wastewater as struvite (NHMgPO·6HO). This new process involves converting urine into struvite, and then reacting struvite with alkali borohydrides to produce a high-purity ammonia borane. The use of mild reaction conditions without extensive purification process, together with high purity ammonia borane product make this process a desirable course of action for recycling the nitrogen waste. In the course of moving towards a sustainable environment, the energy and wastewater industries will benefit from this combined process of nitrogen removal from wastewater to generate a renewable carbon-free energy molecule.

Melanoma, a highly aggressive skin cancer, poses significant challenges due to its rapid metastases and high mortality rates. While metformin (Met), a first-line medication for type 2 diabetes, has shown promise in inhibiting tumor growth and metastases, its clinical efficacy in cancer therapy is limited by low bioavailability, short half-life, and gastrointestinal adverse reactions associated with oral administration. In this study, we developed a hollow mesoporous polydopamine nanocomposite (HMPDA-PEG@Met@AB) coloaded with Met and ammonia borane (AB), designed to enable a combined gas-assisted, photothermal, and chemotherapeutic approach for melanoma treatment.

We report the rapid synthesis of primary amides by directly using commercially available ammonia borane (NH·BH), sodium hexamethyldisilazide (NaHMDS), and esters. The success of this protocol relies on NH·BH as the nitrogen source being considerably more convenient and NaHMDS being an excellent proton abstractor but not participating in the nucleophilic addition reaction. The reaction had a wide substrate scope containing bioactive molecules, and most of the substrates were efficiently amidated over 90% yields.

The utilization of hydrogen in safety conditions is crucial for the development of a hydrogen-based economy. Among all methodologies, solid-state hydrogen release from ammonia borane through thermal stimuli is very promising due to the high theoretical hydrogen release. Generally, carbonaceous or inorganic matrices have been used to tune the reactivity of ammonia borane.

Ammonia borane (NHBH, AB) is considered a promising chemical hydrogen storage material. The development of efficient, stable, and economical catalysts for AB hydrolysis is essential for realizing the hydrogen energy economy. In this study, a series of p-p heterojunction catalysts, labeled M (P/S/Cl)-CuCoO, were fabricated using the high-temperature vapor phase method to achieve anionic interface gradient doping.
