In this study, the reactivity of the alkyl nitrenes, generated from the substituted hydroxylamine precursors, was determined using the same rhodium catalyst. The results revealed that in competitive C-H insertion experiments, the regioselectivity between benzylic and tertiary C-H bonds could be modulated by adding Brønsted acids or changing the substituents on oxygen. This study enhances our understanding of the metallonitrene structures and provides valuable insights for further development of selective N-heterocycle syntheses.

Iron-catalysed intramolecular C(sp)-H amination of alkyl azides.

Iron-catalysed intramolecular C(sp)-H amination of alkyl azides (NR, R = alkyl) the iron-alkylnitrene/alkylimido (Fe(NR)) intermediate, is an appealing synthetic approach for the synthesis of various N-heterocycles. This approach provides a direct atom-economy strategy for constructing C(sp)-N bonds, with nitrogen gas as the only by-product and iron is a biocompatible, cheap, and earth-abundant metal. However, C(sp)-H amination with alkyl azides is challenging because alkyl nitrenes readily undergo 1,2-hydride migration to imines.

Shining light on the nitro group: distinct reactivity and selectivity.

Chem Commun (Camb)

The nitro moiety is an indispensable functional group in organic synthesis due to its facile introduction and reduction to the corresponding amines for a plethora of organic transformations. Owing to its distinct electronegative and conventional properties, it has been used for activated aromatic nucleophilic substitution (SAr) reactions, Smiles reactions, Henry reactions, acyl anion equivalents, Recently, the excellent photochemical properties of nitroarenes have been rediscovered by several groups, and their untapped potential in organic synthesis under UV or visible light irradiation has been exploited. Photoexcited nitroarenes can undergo facile reduction to amines, azo-coupling, metal-free reductive C-N coupling with boronic acids a 1,2-boronate shift, hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), oxygen atom transfer for anaerobic oxidation of organic molecules, molecular editing nitrene intermediates, denitrative coupling of β-nitrostyrene, radical α-alkylation of nitroalkanes, They have also been used as a photolabile protecting group in medicinal chemistry and chemical biology applications.

Stereospecific Enzymatic Conversion of Boronic Acids to Amines.

J Am Chem Soc

July 2024

Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California 91125, United States.

Boronic acids and esters are highly regarded for their safety, unique reactivity, and versatility in synthesizing a wide range of small molecules, bioconjugates, and materials. They are not exploited in biocatalytic synthesis, however, because enzymes that can make, break, or modify carbon-boron bonds are rare. We wish to combine the advantages of boronic acids and esters for molecular assembly with biocatalysis, which offers the potential for unsurpassed selectivity and efficiency.

N-phenyl dibenzothiophene sulfoximine has been demonstrated to produce phenyl nitrene and dibenzothiophene S-oxide upon irradiation with UV-A light, and dibenzothiophene S-oxide upon further irradiation releases triplet atomic oxygen. Thus, N-phenyl dibenzothiophene sulfoximine exhibits a rare dual-release capability in its photochemistry. In this work, N-substituted dibenzothiophene sulfoximine derivatives are irradiated with UV-A light to compare their photochemistry and quantum yield of dibenzothiophene S-oxide production with that of N-phenyl dibenzothiophene sulfoximine.

Iron-Catalyzed Asymmetric Imidation of Sulfides via Sterically Biased Nitrene Transfer.

J Am Chem Soc

Key Laboratory of Green Chemistry & Technology, Ministry of Education, College of Chemistry, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610064, China.

Transition-metal-catalyzed enantioselective nitrene transfer to sulfides has emerged as one of the most powerful strategies for rapid construction of enantioenriched sulfimides. However, achieving stereocontrol over highly active earth-abundant transition-metal nitrenoid intermediates remains a formidable challenge compared with precious metals. Herein, we disclose a chiral iron(II)/,'-dioxide-catalyzed enantioselective imidation of dialkyl and alkyl aryl sulfides using iminoiodinanes as nitrene precursors.
