Article Synopsis
  • - Malignant syndromes are serious medical conditions that develop rapidly and can lead to life-threatening complications if not treated promptly.
  • - These syndromes share similar clinical features and mechanisms, affecting various neurotransmitter systems, which highlight the need for urgent medical attention.
  • - Understanding the clinical aspects and underlying causes of malignant syndromes is crucial for effective management and reducing the risks of severe health consequences.

Metropolitan Mexico City (MMC) children and young adults exhibit overlapping Alzheimer and Parkinsons' diseases (AD, PD) and TAR DNA-binding protein 43 pathology with magnetic ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM) and industrial nanoparticles (NPs). We studied magnetophoresis, electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry in 203 brain samples from 14 children, 27 adults, and 27 ALS cases/controls. Saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM), capturing magnetically unstable FeNPs ~ 20nm, was higher in caudate, thalamus, hippocampus, putamen, and motor regions with subcortical vs.

Article Synopsis
  • The akinetic crisis is a severe, potentially life-threatening condition in Parkinson's disease characterized by extreme rigidity and akinesia that does not respond to levodopa, often accompanied by high fever and altered consciousness.
  • Although akinetic crises are rare, milder forms of motor deterioration in Parkinson's patients frequently lead to hospitalizations, highlighting the broader spectrum of akinetic symptoms.
  • The review explores clinical symptoms, risk factors, diagnostic methods like DAT-SPECT for assessing levodopa-resistance, and discusses the role of inflammatory cytokines in progression, along with guidelines for managing these conditions.

Parkinsonism-Hyperpyrexia Syndrome During General Anesthesia: A Case Report.

August 2024

From the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, School of Medicine, Urayasu Hospital, Juntendo University, Urayasu, Chiba, Japan.

Parkinsonism-hyperpyrexia syndrome (PHS) is a rare, fatal complication of Parkinson's disease (PD) that manifests in patients who abruptly discontinue or reduce their antiParkinsonian medication. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a PHS case occurring in a patient undergoing general anesthesia. In the perioperative period of PD patients, it is important for anesthesiologists to prevent PHS as well as monitor patients to enable early detection and prompt response when it occurs.

Analyze the adverse event (AE) signals of istradefylline based on the FAERS database. By extracting large-scale data from the FAERS database, this study used various signal quantification techniques such as ROR, PRR, BCPNN, and MGPS to calculate and evaluate the ratio and association between istradefylline and specific AEs. In the FAERS database, this study extracted data from the third quarter of 2019 to the first quarter of 2023, totaling 6,749,750 AE reports.
