Nitrogen-doped cavities are pervasive in graphenic materials, and represent key sites for catalytic and electrochemical activity. However, their structures are generally heterogeneous. In this study, we present the synthesis of a well-defined molecular cutout of graphene featuring N-doped cavity. The graphitization of a macrocyclic pyridinic precursor was achieved through photochemical cyclodehydrochlorination. In comparison to its counterpart with pyridinic nitrogen at the edges, the pyridinic nitrogen atoms in this nanographene cavity exhibit significantly reduced basicity and selective binding to Ag ion. Analysis of the protonation and coordination equilibria revealed that the tri-N-doped cavity binds three protons, but only one Ag ion. These distinct protonation and coordination behaviors clearly illustrate the space confinement effect imparted by the cavities.

Chiral amines and amino alcohols form an important category of molecules employed in the designing of new drugs and catalyst. Herein, we present a helically-twisted stereodynamic dialdehyde probe 1 for the determining of absolute configuration, and enantiomeric excess of chiral amine and amino alcohols. Probe 1 is based on the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide (PDC) core and undergoes rapid interconversion between the P- and M- conformers.

Cancer, characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells potentially influencing almost all tissues in the body, is one of the most devastating and lethal diseases throughout the world. Chemotherapy is one of the principal approaches for cancer treatment, but multidrug resistance and severe side effects represent the main barriers to the success of therapy, creating a vital need to develop novel chemotherapeutic agents. The 1,2,3-triazole moiety can be conveniently constructed by "click chemistry" and could exert diverse noncovalent interactions with various enzymes in cancer cells.

To investigate the structural and functional similarities of microbial communities in burnt-sweetness alcoholized tobacco as a function of distance from the equator and their effects on tobacco quality, we sampled alcoholized tobacco from Chenzhou, Hunan Province, China and from Brazil and Zimbabwe, which are also burnt-sweetness-type tobacco producing regions, and performed high-throughput sequencing of tobacco bacterial and fungal communities along with an analysis of the main chemical constituents of the tobacco to analyze differences in the quality of the tobacco and similarities in the structure of the microbial communities. The total nitrogen, nicotine and starch contents of Chenzhou tobacco were greater than those of Brazilian and Zimbabwean tobacco, and the total sugar and reducing sugar contents of the Brazilian and Zimbabwean tobacco were greater than those of the Chenzhou tobacco (P < 0.05).

This manuscript describes a simple and effective method to cyclodehydrogenate arenes using liquid alkali metals. Direct reaction between molten potassium and arenes forms 6-membered rings and zigzag edged structures within polyarenes. The approach is extended to integration of pyridinic nitrogen and 5-membered rings to arene structures and synthesis of larger, open-shell nanographenes.

Aqueous zinc-carbon capacitors display application potential in green power and high-end equipment owing to their high security, large power and sustainability. The water-rich zinc anode-electrolyte interface (AEI) and disordered zinc-ion diffusion are the culprits triggering corrosion reactions and dendrite growth, threatening the sustainability of aqueous zinc-carbon capacitors. Herein, a polyfunctional biomolecular, vitamin B6, is introduced into the traditional aqueous electrolyte for customizing the functional AEI and fine-regulating the interfacial coordination environment of zinc ions.
