This case report describes the positive interference of the commonly used skin protective barrier cream used together with urine collection bags on the benzethonium chloride method for urine protein measurements in a 6-month-old female baby, leading to falsely elevated results. The interference was identified by both artificially mixing urine samples with this cream and comparing the results obtained using the benzethonium chloride method with those obtained using the pyrogallol red method.

Homogentisic acid (HGA) accumulation in alkaptonuria (AKU) causes injuries in various organs including the kidney. We present a case of a 9-year-old girl initially diagnosed with AKU-related nephropathy due to proteinuria found in her urine analyses. Despite 1 month of ramipril treatment, the patient's proteinuria progressed, and as a result, kidney biopsy and nitisinone treatment were planned.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), ecotoxic organic chemicals linked to multidrug resistance, are being used increasingly, for example to prevent the transmission of infections such as covid-19, in households, hospitals, and industry. To understand the locations, fluctuations, and fractions of QACs entering sewers, we monitored 14 QACs (benzalkonium chloride [BAC]-C8, C10, C12, C14, C16, and C18; dialkyldimethylammonium chloride [DDAC]-C8, C10, and C12; alkyltrimethylammonium chloride [ATAC]-C12, C16, and C18; benzethonium chloride; and cetylpyridinium chloride), and a disinfectant (chlorhexidine) in influent at four Japanese sewage treatment plants (STPs) five times throughout a year. Mass inflows were relatively stable throughout the year, indicating that the recent seasonal covid-19 epidemic did not greatly influence them.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) are high production chemicals used in many commercial and household disinfection products. During the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic, QACs were included on lists of COVID-19 disinfectants. Increased QAC use could lead to higher levels of QACs in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, which could subsequently be released into the environment.
