The oxidation of β-NiAl at high temperatures leads to the preferential formation of metastable alumina, such as θ-AlO, which exhibits a significantly faster growth rate compared to stable α-AlO. However, our recent research has shown that through the use of the surface-dispersing nanoparticles (NPs) of metal oxides with a hexagonal closed pack (hcp), such as α-AlO, the thermal growth of α-AlO can be facilitated. The present study employed laser additive manufacturing (LAM) to develop an integrated α-AlO NPs surface-seeded two-phase intermetallic alloy comprising brittle β-NiAl and tougher γ'-NiAl, which demonstrated better comprehensive mechanical properties. It was found that seeding the α-AlO NPs promoted the early stage growth of α-AlO on both β and γ' phases during oxidation in air at 1000 °C. This led to a decrease in the oxidation rate but an enhancement in adhesion of the formed alumina scale in comparison to the naked β/γ' two-phase alloy. The reasons for this result were interpreted.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, a non-thermal light therapy using nonionizing light sources, has shown therapeutic potential across diverse biological processes, including aging and age-associated diseases. In 2023, scientists from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Intramural and Extramural programs convened a workshop on the topic of PBM to discuss various proposed mechanisms of PBM action, including the stimulation of mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase, modulation of cell membrane transporters and receptors, and the activation of transforming growth factor-β1. They also reviewed potential therapeutic applications of PBM across a range of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, retinal disease, Parkinson's disease, and cognitive impairment.

Drug toxicity during the development of candidate pharmaceuticals is the leading cause of discontinuation in preclinical drug discovery and development. Traditionally, the cause of the toxicity is often determined by histological examination, clinical pathology, and the detection of drugs and/or metabolites by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). While these techniques individually provide information on the pathological effects of the drug and the detection of metabolites, they cannot provide specific molecular spatial information without additional experiments.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a biomarker for many diseases, and monitoring its activity level is important for disease diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we used the microdroplet technology combined with an laser-induced polymerization method to prepare the Ag nanoparticle (AgNP) doped hydrogel microbeads (HMBs) with adjustable pore sizes that allow small molecules to enter while blocking large molecules. The AgNPs embedded in the hydrogel microspheres can provide SERS activity, improving the SERS signal of small molecules that diffuse to the AgNPs.

Electrical stimulation displayed tremendous potential in promoting nerve regeneration. However, the current electrical stimulation therapy required complex traversing wires and external power sources, which significantly limited its practical application. Herein, a self-powered nerve scaffold based on primary battery principle was gradient printed by laser additive manufacturing technique.

Lamb waves are widely used for defect detection in structural health monitoring, and various methods are developed for Lamb wave data analysis. This paper presents an unsupervised Adversarial Transformer model for anomalous Lamb wave pattern detection by analyzing the spatiotemporal images generated by a hybrid PZT-scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). The model includes the global attention and the local attention mechanisms, and both are trained adversarially.
