The case for neurons: a no-go theorem for consciousness on a chip.

Neurosci Conscious

December 2024

Department of Philosophy, Institute of Technology Futures, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Douglasstraße 24, Karlsruhe 76133, Germany.

We apply the methodology of no-go theorems as developed in physics to the question of artificial consciousness. The result is a no-go theorem which shows that under a general assumption, called dynamical relevance, Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that run on contemporary computer chips cannot be conscious. Consciousness is dynamically relevant, simply put, if, according to a theory of consciousness, it is relevant for the temporal evolution of a system's states.

How Brains Perceive the World.

Artif Life

November 2024

Michigan State University, Department of Microbiology, Genetics, and Immunology.

Article Synopsis
  • The text explores the possibility of machines being sentient, questioning whether they can truly perceive, feel, and be conscious of their surroundings.
  • It discusses the potential for achieving sentience through Darwinian evolution to create artificial brains for robots.
  • The author also raises ethical concerns and dangers associated with developing sentient machines.

Evolution of Consciousness.

Life (Basel)

December 2023

Institute for Advanced Study, 30 Vasilaki Papadopulu Str., 9010 Varna, Bulgaria.

The natural evolution of consciousness in different animal species mandates that conscious experiences are causally potent in order to confer any advantage in the struggle for survival. Any endeavor to construct a physical theory of consciousness based on emergence within the framework of classical physics, however, leads to causally impotent conscious experiences in direct contradiction to evolutionary theory since epiphenomenal consciousness cannot evolve through natural selection. Here, we review recent theoretical advances in describing sentience and free will as fundamental aspects of reality granted by quantum physical laws.

Path integrals, particular kinds, and strange things.

Phys Life Rev

December 2023

Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging, Institute of Neurology, University College London, London WC1N 3AR, UK. Electronic address:

This paper describes a path integral formulation of the free energy principle. The ensuing account expresses the paths or trajectories that a particle takes as it evolves over time. The main results are a method or principle of least action that can be used to emulate the behaviour of particles in open exchange with their external milieu.
