Functional metamaterials can be constructed by assembling nanoparticles (NPs) into well-ordered structures, which show fascinating properties at different length scales. Using polymer-grafted NPs (PGNPs) as a building block, flexible composite metamaterials can be obtained, of which the structure is significantly affected by the property of polymer ligands. Here, it is demonstrated that the crystallization of polymer ligands determines the assembly behavior of NPs and reveal a pathway-dependent self-assembly of PGNPs into different metastructures in solution. By changing the crystallization degree of polymer ligands, the arrangement structure of NPs can be tailored. When the polymer ligands highly crystallize, the PGNPs assemble into diamond-shaped platelets, in which the NPs arrange disorderedly. When the polymer ligands lowly crystallize, the PGNPs assemble into highly ordered 3D superlattices, in which the NPs pack into a body-centered-cubic structure. The structure transformation of PGNP assemblies can be achieved by thermal annealing to regulate the crystallization of polymer ligands. Interestingly, the diamond-shaped platelets remain "living" for seeded epitaxial growth of newly added crystalline species. This work demonstrates the effects of ligand crystallization on the crystallization of NP, providing new insights into the structure regulation of metamaterials.

A new twofold interpenetrated 3D metal-organic framework (MOF), namely, poly[[μ-aqua-diaqua{μ-2,2'-[terephthaloylbis(azanediyl)]diacetato}barium(II)] dihydrate], {[Ba(CHNO)(HO)]·2HO}, (I), has been assembled through a combination of the reaction of 2,2'-[terephthaloylbis(azanediyl)]diacetic acid (TPBA, HL) with barium hydroxide and crystallization at low temperature. In the crystal structure of (I), the nine-coordinated Ba ions are bridged by two μ-aqua ligands and two carboxylate μ-O atoms to form a 1D loop-like Ba-O chain, which, together with the other two coordinated water molecules and μ-carboxylate groups, produces a rod-like secondary building unit (SBU). The resultant 1D polynuclear SBUs are further extended into a 3D MOF via the terephthalamide moiety of the ligand as a spacer.

Ln-MOFs, composed of lanthanide ions and functional organic ligands, are porous materials with tunable structures and unique luminescent properties. However, the interplay between ligand AIE properties and the framework's "antenna effect" on MOF morphology is understudied. Here, Tb-D-Cam-TPTB was synthesized via solvothermal method using TPTB (persulfurated arene) as the primary ligand, D-Cam as the auxiliary ligand, and Tb3+ as the metal ion.

The release of microcystin (MCs) in aquatic ecosystems poses a substantial risk to the safety of irrigation and drinking water. In view of the challenges associated with monitoring MCs in water bodies, given their low concentration levels (μg/L to ng/L) and the presence of diverse matrix interferences, there is an urgent need to develop an efficient, cost-effective and selective enrichment technique for MCs prior to its quantification. In this work, a gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-functionalized zwitterionic polymer monolith was described and further applied for the affinity enrichment of MCs.

The nanoengager strategy, which enhances receptor signaling responsiveness through a multivalent ligand binding mode, offers a promising approach for improving immune cell redirecting therapy. Increasing nanomaterial platforms have been developed for constructing more flexible and multifunctional nanoengagers, but the different mediating mechanisms from their multivalent nanostructures, compared to original monomolecule engagers, have rarely been discussed. Here, we constructed dual-specificity T cell nanoengagers (TNEs) targeting CD3 and PDL1 receptors based on a polyethylene glycol--polylactic acid (PEG--PLA)-assembled nanoparticle and specifically studied the impact of surface antibody valences on their functional mechanisms, thereby enhancing the structural advantages of TNEs against solid tumors.

Bacterial peptidoglycan, the essential cell surface polymer that protects bacterial integrity, also serves as the molecular pattern recognized by the host's innate immune system. Although the minimal motifs of bacterial peptidoglycan fragments (PGNs) that activate mammalian NOD1 and NOD2 sensors are well-known and often represented by small canonical ligands, the immunostimulatory effects of natural PGNs, which are structurally more complex and potentially can simultaneously activate both the NOD1 and NOD2 signaling pathways in hosts, have not been comprehensively investigated. In particular, many bacteria incorporate additional structural modifications in peptidoglycans to evade host immune surveillance, resulting in diverse structural variations among natural PGNs that may influence their biological effects in hosts.
