Introduction: Osmium tetroxide is a strong oxidizing agent. After dermal exposure to osmium tetroxide, skin discoloration and red papules can occur. We describe a patient with skin discoloration due to osmium tetroxide.
Case Summary: A 25-year-old postgraduate student unintentionally exposed his hand to osmium tetroxide while working in a laboratory setting. After immediate washing, he sought medical care due to left middle finger discoloration. He reported no discomfort in the affected area. Thorough water rinsing was continued, and corticosteroid ointment was applied.
Images: Our patient developed dark brown pigmentation on the ventral side of the left middle finger. The pigmentation disappeared one week later.
Conclusion: Osmium tetroxide may induce dark brown skin discoloration.

In this study, Diels-Alder reaction was performed to sulfolene and endo/exo-diacetate compounds. After a series of reactions, new conduritol A and F analogs containing oxo-bridge and naphthalene rings in their structures were synthesized. To the starting compound, bromination, elimination, singlet oxygen reaction, acetylation, selective oxidation with osmium tetroxide (OsO), and m-chloroperbenzoic acid (m-CPBA), re-acetylation, and finally hydrolysis of the compounds by NH(g)/MeOH reactions were carried out.

This study investigated the usefulness of histopathological examination in diagnosing ketoacidosis in hypothermia cases. Out of 79 cases (38 females), 30 showed basal vacuolization (BV), a representative histopathological finding of ketoacidosis, in their hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained specimens. Through the use of both lipid staining with osmium tetroxide postfixation and immunohistochemistry for adipophilin (ADFP-IHC), BV pattern pathology was identified in 43 cases.

This method describes the preparation of specimen for scanning electron microscopy (SEM), starting from specimen collection to obtaining SEM images. Our approach involves preserving cellular structure and preventing cell degradation through chemical fixation and post-fixation without Osmium tetroxide (OsO), followed by air dried specimen placed onto Si substrate. Additionally, the method outlines the steps for mounting the prepared specimen onto SEM sample holder aluminum stubs, followed by coating with an ultrathin gold layer via thermal evaporation to enhance specimen/substrate/stub conductivity.

Obesity and osteoporosis are two prevalent conditions that are becoming increasingly common worldwide, primarily due to aging populations, imbalanced energy intake, and sedentary lifestyles. Obesity, characterized by excessive fat accumulation, and osteoporosis, marked by reduced bone density and increased fracture risk, are often interconnected. High-fat diets (HFDs) can exacerbate both conditions by promoting bone marrow adiposity and bone loss.
