If the life sciences are to have much to say about politics, there needs to be a universal element to political orientations. In this essay, I argue that the recent prominence of nativist, law-and-order, populist politicians reveals the nature of this universal element. All social units have to address bedrock dilemmas about how to deal with norm violators and how welcoming to be to outsiders as well as to proponents of new lifestyles. Might differences on these core dilemmas be the universal element of political life? Using the followers of one of the most prominent examples of a nativist political leader-Donald Trump-as an example, I present data showing that Trump's most earnest followers are different from others-even those who share their general ideological leanings-not on traditional economic or social issues, but rather on the group-based security issues that grow out of the bedrock dilemmas of social life.

Objectives: Ageism occurs across the world, with negative consequences for individuals and societies. In 2016, WHO received a mandate from its Member States to lead the global campaign to combat ageism. To monitor, evaluate, and build evidence for reducing ageism, the availability of a brief, reliable and valid set of indicators of ageism experiences that can be used globally is essential.

The frequency diverse array (FDA) is an architecture capable of beamforming in both range and angle, improving upon the traditional phased array (PA) which can only achieve beamforming in angle. The FDA employing directional modulation (DM) for secure directional communications (SDC) can reduce bit error rates (BERs) in both range and angle, again improving upon the traditional PA which can only reduce BER in angle. In this paper, we document the challenges involved in the design and implementation of a two-element linear FDA employing fast-time binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulations.

Cyclic Imines and Their Salts as Universal Precursors in the Synthesis of Nitrogen-Containing Alkaloids.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry, FRC Kazan Scientific Center, Russian Academy of Sciences, Arbuzov Str., 8, Kazan 420088, Russia.

Alkaloids are predominantly nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds that are usually isolated from plants, and sometimes from insects or animals. Alkaloids are one of the most important types of natural products due to their diverse biological activities and potential applications in modern medicine. Cyclic imines were chosen as starting compounds for the synthesis of alkaloids due to their high synthetic potential.

Interface Microstructure and Properties of 42CrMo/Cr5 Vacuum Billet Forged Composite Roll.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Roll Composite Materials, Sinosteel Xing Tai Mechanical Roll Co., Ltd., No. 1 Xinxing West Street, Xingtai 054000, China.

Composite roll produced through casting methods typically remain in the as-cast state after forming. During the preparation process, extended exposure to high temperatures often results in microstructural coarsening at the interface and surface layers, restricting their mechanical performance. To overcome this limitation, we developed a novel vacuum billet forging process for the fabrication of composite rolls.

This article presents a new parametric method for shaping flat transverse frame structural systems supporting thin-walled roofs made of flat sheets folded unidirectionally and transformed elastically to various shell forms. The parameterization was limited to one independent variable, that is the stiffness of the support joints. For different discrete values of simulated stiffness, the surface areas of the cross sections of the tensile and compressed elements and the section modulus of the bending elements were calculated so as to obtain the optimized work of the frame and its elements in the assumed load environment.
