Published: January 2024

Despite the fact that d-band center theory links the d electron structure of transition metals to their catalytic activity, it is yet unknown how the synergistic effect of multi-d electrons impacts catalytic performance. Herein, novel LaNi Co Ru intermetallics containing 5d, 4d, and 3d electrons were prepared. In these compounds, the 5d orbital of La transfers electrons to the 4d orbital of Ru, which provides adsorption sites for H*. The 3d orbitals of Ni and Co interact with the 5d and 4d orbitals to generate an anisotropic electron distribution, which facilitates the adsorption and desorption of OH*. The synergistic effect of multi-d electrons ensures efficient catalytic activity. The optimized LaNi Co Ru has an overpotential of 43mV at 10 mA cm for alkaline electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. Beyond offering a variety of new electrocatalysts, this work reveals the multi-d electron synergy in promoting catalytic reaction.

Despite the prevalence of first-row transition metal-containing compounds in virtually all areas of chemistry, the accurate modeling of these systems is a known challenge for the theoretical chemistry community. Such a challenge is shown in a myriad of facets; among them are difficulties in defining ground-state multiplicities, disagreement in the results from methods considered highly accurate, and convergence problems in calculations for excited states. These problems cause a scarcity of reliable theoretical data for transition metal-containing systems.

The dynamics of a coupled electron-boson system is investigated by employing a multitude of the Davydov D trial states, also known as the multi-D Ansatz, and a second trial state based on a superposition of the time-dependent generalized coherent state (GCS Ansatz). The two Ansätze are applied to study population dynamics in the spin-boson model and the Holstein molecular crystal model, and a detailed comparison with numerically exact results obtained by the (multilayer) multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method and the hierarchy equations of motion approach is drawn. It is found that the two methodologies proposed here have significantly improved over that with the single D Ansatz, yielding quantitatively accurate results even in the critical cases of large energy biases and large transfer integrals.

A novel class of multi-D-shaped optical fiber suited for refractive index measurements is presented. The multi-D-shaped optical fiber was constructed by forming several D-sections in a multimode optical fiber at localized regions with femtosecond laser pulses. The total number of D-shaped zones fabricated could range from three to seven.
