Published: February 2024

Dr Schumacher was a force in rheumatology for more than half a century through his multiple roles as a researcher, clinician, mentor, and educator. He is not likely to be soon forgotten by the rheumatology community; however, it is hoped that this chapter can provide a faithful recollection that will help bring his memory to life for some and that rings true to those who knew him and learned from him.

The Role of Prior Knowledge and Intelligence in Gaining from a Training on Proportional Reasoning.

J Intell

May 2022

Chair for Research on Learning and Instruction, ETH Zürich, Clausiusstrasse 59, 8092 Zürich, Switzerland.

We explored the mediating role of prior knowledge on the relation between intelligence and learning proportional reasoning. What students gain from formal instruction may depend on their intelligence, as well as on prior encounters with proportional concepts. We investigated whether a basic curriculum unit on the concept of density promoted students' learning in a training on proportional reasoning.

Triple Therapy Versus Biologic Therapy for Active Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis.

Ann Intern Med

July 2017

From University of British Columbia and St Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Palo Alto Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care System, Palo Alto, and Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California; VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care Center and University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska; Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts; and University of Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Background: The RACAT (Rheumatoid Arthritis Comparison of Active Therapies) trial found triple therapy to be noninferior to etanercept-methotrexate in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Objective: To determine the cost-effectiveness of etanercept-methotrexate versus triple therapy as a first-line strategy.

Design: A within-trial analysis based on the 353 participants in the RACAT trial and a lifetime analysis that extrapolated costs and outcomes by using a decision analytic cohort model.

Background: Valid assessment of the understanding of Newton's mechanics is highly relevant to both physics classrooms and research. Several tests have been developed. What remains missing, however, is an efficient and fair test of conceptual understanding that is adapted to the content taught to secondary school students and that can be validly applied as a pre- and posttest to reflect change.
